dont know what to do

i was wondering how to remove an engine in the field or any other option to get it out where the tractor is. i have a international harvester 706 lp the reason i ask this is because my uncle used my tractor after i told him not to and it quit in the field. now i haven"t tried but i don"t think my 1989 f-150 4x4 will pull a tractor this big to the shop and i sold my bigger truck. so how should i go about removing the engine or getting it running cause i think it is stuck but i am not sure. because it is about 2 miles from the shop and i really need help and any suggestion is welcome.

thanks

You should go to your Uncle and tell him to get it back home or else. No one would get my tractors if I told them no without severe problems. He should fix it.

First, I'd try the F-150. All you have to lose is some rough patches in the ground where there wasn't enough traction.

If you can't find a helper tractor, I'd find someone else with a pickup and use two pickups in tandem.

Next, I would do nearly anything to avoid pulling an engine in the field...so many things can go wrong, tools are faraway, parts can get lost on the ground plus you are faced with elemental problems.

If you are careful and slow, it will do it. (Assumes nothing is attached and in the ground).
I also believe your uncle has an obligation to be with you on the entire adventure. He defied your word, used your tractor, and must get it together and help. JimN

I would not pull the engine. If the field isn't muddy your truck should be able to pull it. Add some weight to the truck so it can get traction.
Hal
PS: It will be easier to determine why the engine quit if left on the tractor.

it rained today so i will have to wait till it dries up. an my neighbor said he will bring his f-250 and if that does not work he will bring out his tractor. so things are starting to look up but my uncle is crazy. he told me it was not his fault the tractor messed up and he's not paying for anything. i gave him an ear full and he's going to pay for it because i spent all my hard earned money on the parts for the rebuild and don't have extra money to spend on something that could have been prevented. and he better pray that its not locked up cause i heard its a lot of work to free it up.

Put the transfer case in low range 4 wheel drive and try it. If you can , use a heavy tow rope instead of a chain.

As long as the tractor is not stuck in the mud it will roll pretty easy.

Be VERY careful. You won't have brakes or power steering.

Yes, yes, I know that the brakes are SUPPOSED to work on these tractors with the engine off, but I have yet to sit on one where the pedals don't go all the way to the floor with the engine off.

Rather than a chain or strap, I would recommend a solid connection between the truck and tractor so you don't end up with a tractor in the bed of the truck. Some sort of tow bar.

Martin, what do you think happened?

what i think happened is it was using a lot of oil and i put some in but the oil pressure was still low. so i figured it had a leak that's why i told everyone not to use it i guess i should have taken the key just to make sure it was not used. i could weld up a tow bar and use that or buy a good big tow rope. the tractor is on level ground so it should work fine.

That 706 pulls easy. We pulled one out of a plowed field and a few miles down the road with a 65 Chev 1/2 ton two wheel drive with no prodlem.

If it has the TA in it, it won't start by pulling it so don't try. Might screw something up besides.

It ain't worth screwing up a family relationship with an uncle, and it won't stop there, over the cost of a repair job. Honey catches more bears that pepper. If he's not too bad of guy, as he sees the repair job and realizes what he did and how much it's gonna cost, I'd suggest giving him the opportunity to come to his senses and pitch in.

The tow bar would be a better choice. It may have spun a bearing if the oil level was low. Have you tried to see if the engine will turn over? Hal

I have an uncle like that too. I don't think your going to be able to pull this that far, your not going to have any steering at all. Just be carefull, If your pulling it with something big enough you can brake steer, I dont know about an f-150, chevy 1500 maybe. Just kidding good luck!

the tractor is on good solid ground just to wet right now to pull but should be able to tomorrow tho. i don't know what i am going to do for steering tho because i have to make two turns and one is threw a gate. could i possible turn the wheels manually some how to make the turns. cause i was going to use the breaks to turn but it was said they don't work with the engine off. also i will try to make peace with my uncle and try to get him to pay up but he is as stubborn as a mule.

a cheap towbar is easy to make take a piece of pipe say 15 ft. and run a chain thru it and wala a tow bar that will pull and prevent the tractor from running you over. STEVE

A tow truck won't cost but maybe $150.00 at least around here. My son got our 1086 stuck real bad one winter and that was $125.00. So before I went to a lot of work of making a tow bar I'd try that. Oh and maybe the uncle would pay.

I welded one up that hooks on to the draw bar trailer hitch and hooks to my trucks trailer hitch. Now i just have to wait for it to dry up that's Mississippi for you then i can give it a try.

it keeps raining here so i am not going to use my truck. i am going to use my tractor that just got back from the tire shop so the tires have plenty of grip. i think the old ford 2000 can pull this tractor home and i can use the breaks to turn it.
