Glass jar air cleaners

I have noticed that on the Photo Ads that some people put down that the tractor has a "glass jar air cleaner". I know what it is because our 400 had one on it but the 300 doesn't. But are they something unique or better at catching dust? Were there only certain years and tractors they put them on?

The glass jar precleaner was an option and can be put on any IH (or other) tractor with the correct stack size.
That said, it is a useful item in dirt, insects, or trashy air conditions. It will accept wide mouth Mason Jars of all standard thread, up to 1 quart size if it doesn't hit the hood. The original 1/2 pint jars are squareish in shape with rised vertiacal ribs near the corners. I remember that it said Mason Special on the side.
Original jars are getting hard to find.

The pre cleaner was an an extra to be ordered when the tractor was built. It is listed for extremly dusty conditions.

Without going to my shed to check (it"s zero outside right now), my 1950 H has the glass jar. "Correct police" say the real jar has the words "Mason Special Wide Mouth" formed in the glass and usually sells for $20 each at midwest shows. I often see Kerr, plain Mason and others priced at $20, but they are a dime a dozen. I have 3 little John Deeres in my jar, they really vibrate around and wheels are spinning on them as I tool down the road. Fun!

Yes, they were used on tractors working in extremely dirty or dusty areas. The jar held more dust.

The shape of the fins on the bottom acts like a fan blade and spins the air so it acts like a centrifuge, without the jar it doesn't work as it just draws air in through the opening for the jar. The jar gives the dirt a place to go, and being glass lets you know when to empty it. Same principal as in the newer equipment with the big round precleaner on top of the air intake.
