ok guys, I currently own a farmall h (not restored) and I picked up a ih 4 row 456 planter last fall, its in pretty good shape. I was wondering will this tractor have problems pulling this? If not why did they only use 1 or 2 row units back in the day? I will only be planting about 5 acres of corn.

456 planter pulled by H? Tractor will pull it on fairly level ground. 2nd gear work, watch the turns. 4 row planter on H is about its limit, the old 1 and 2 row planters were carry overs from the horse days and 15-20 hp tractors. Used to use H on old family farm for planter while M did the last disk pass before planting, 3 brothers that could handle tractor meant father had full crew for many jobs, couple tractors could be kept going. I grew up in the hills of southern Iowa. Dad and I both planted countless acres with an H and a six row planter, up and down the hills, around them and every other direction. I don't ever remember having had a problem with the tractor being able to handle the planter.

Your H should pull it fine unless it is really down on power, I have pulled a 4 row with a super C and it worked ok (not great) good luck. Dave
