difference in alternators

On the Brillman web site they list 2 alternators. What is the difference between a SELF EXCITING and a LOW CUT IN SPEED for tractors. I thought a regular one wire alternator once you reved up the motor would start the charging process. Does anybody know the difference and would it matter ?

In general the low cut in speed system might allow a earlier self excitation. thus making it less demanding to rev up the engine, or use a small pulley (which might do more slipping and belt stress) All one wire setups are self exciting. Many on this IH forum believe a off the shelf three wire is easy and practical for best operation. Either Hitachi from a mid 1980s Nissan PU for tight fitting locations in some tractors, or Delco SI series GM for the main install. JimN

The 3-wire Delco 10SI will self excite if revved high enough. Our SMTA has a Delco 3-wire & the lead from the 10 ohm "turn on" resistor got disconnected last winter & it would charge if the RPM's were high enough. I don't like to rev up a cold engine, but I also like to have it charging while warming up---guess I'm just set in my ways. Anyway, I re-connected the resistor & all is well.
