adding power beyond on a 1086

Anyone have experience adding a power beyond system on a 1086? I want to operate my front loader from a joystick in the cab, leaving the two rear SCVs for another tool.

First of all, make sure you have the 17 GPM pump on there - the slower pump will make loader work miserable!

Personally, I prefer a PTO pump, separate reservoir and controls for a loader on the older IH tractors. They just didn't have the hydraulics that the modern tractors do.

Sorry I don't have any experience with power beyond, other than I ran a Hydro 86 that had the loader set up that way and it was PAINFULLY slow compared to our newer loaders and the ones we have with separate 540 PTO pumps on them...

If you have access to a Case IH dealer have them print you a copy of service bulletin S-3436 from March of 1977. It shows how to hook up power beyond. Need to be sure that flow can go through the added valve bank and back in supercharge line when valve is in neutral and that return flow from loader will go to sump when using loader.

It looks like from the picture that I could still use the PTO and the pump at the same time. Is that right?

The PTO shaft sticking out the pump is something we had a machine shop make for us. It wedges inside the splines of the pump so we could run the feedwagon without removing the pump. All the power is transmitted through the pump shaft, so having something that required a lot of power might not be a good idea, but we ran grain augers, grinder mixer, and feedwagon that way.

There are also long extension shafts that will go all the way through the pump and have enough sticking out to connect to, those would handle more power in my opinion. The pump would be back a bit farther, though.

I disagree with the PTO pump on any tractor... It is a complete waste of the PTO if you can upgrade the hydraulic pump. I have a 1962 Farmall 504 diesel that I installed a Koyker loader, 17 GPM pump and open center power beyond valve. It is faster than most any new tractors and approaches backhoe speeds.

I agree that having a PTO pump isn't the best option, but for many of us a loader tractor isn't used for PTO work very often so it might be a cheaper alternative to an upgrade of the tractor's pump.

And a PTO pump with either 21, 23, or up to 40 GPM (all available for under $500) is faster than 17 GPM.
