Zenith Carburetor Overhaul

I know the basics of carburetors. I have overhauled my Ford 8N Marvel-Schebler. I have a Zenith on my 41 Farmall A. There is a good TUTORIAL on line on the Marvel that I used. Is there any available for the Zenith? It leaks...haven't established where from yet, but, of course, drips off the bottom. Need to order a complete overhaul kit. Would welcome advice on which kit to get. I am guessing a problem with a stuck float or hole in float, but could be other. Thanks for any tips.

Good Mornin Tom,
If you have done another carb before it will be pretty easy for you. The zenith is a pretty easy carb to go through. The kit I got when i did mine on my Super A had good instructions and illustrations.

You are probablly right about the stuck float giving you a leaking problem, very possible ! Get the kit pull the carb apart, clean your parts well in carb cleaner. Make sure all your internal holes are cleaned well and blow out with compressed air.

Make sure you follow the directions on setting the height on the float and I think you will be fine !

Good Luck !

Congratulations on the new tractor.

There may be one out there, but I don't know of a step-by-step tutorial on rebuilding a Zenith, apart from the instructions that come with some kits.

The dripping could very well be from a stuck or leaky float, the needle stuck or blocked by debris, and that may need checking out.

But first I'd ask if the dripping happens when you have just opened up the valve on the sediment bowl without cranking the motor. If so, then it is probably in the carb.

If not, I'll just add that those little 113s/123s with Zeniths didn't need and wouldn't tolerate much choke. Usually no more than one or two turns of the motor at full choke. After that, you'd want to open up the choke before cranking any more or they'd start flooding and dripping.

Have you had it running since the rebuild? If not, it might be worth taking a look, too at your air supply. If it's restricted, the vacuum will pull more gas and less air resulting in the same problem, even if the carb is in tip-top shape. If you haven't already, try pulling the cup off the bottom of your air cleaner. Look up from the bottom to make sure there's no obstruction in the center pipe up to the top and nothing obvious plugging up the mesh in the body of the air cleaner. Up here in the cold climes, if you get enough water built up in the cup at the bottom, it will freeze and block any air flow, so if that's a factor, check that out, too.

If you can get it to start without flooding with the cup off, then just refill the cup to the line and put it back on and go.

Bottom line, though, I suspect the float or needle or too much choke as the root of your problem.

Somewhere on that Zenith carburetor is a tag with a number on it. Find the tag, get the number, and we'll find the correct kit for it.

For American Zentith carbs - you can download a full repair manual here - it's about 4 megabytes. If you ever need repair info for British Zeinith carbs used on some IH tractors, I have a copy here. American Zenith and British Zenith are totally different companies.

I would really like to see that .pdf of the Zenith Repair Manual. I cannot get that URL to work. It redirects to the home page for something called Vistaprint. Do I need to do a spyware purge or do others see the same thing? Thanks.

I just tried it an it works fine for me. That URL takes you directly to the download for the pdf. If you're having trouble, you can go to the main website first and then scroll down and find the link.
