1950 H engine rebuild advice #2

Ok made some progress on this engine, called all over town trying to find safety wire, ended up getting it at Duncan Aviation where it is used all the time for aircraft.

Is there manuals that cover these odds & ends besides the parts & service manuals that I have, or is it just learned from experience?

More questions
How far do I press in the oil deflector?
Is the new oil seal that is thinner, enough, or do I need 2 seals?
Someone mentioned priming the oil pump when I install it, how do I do that?
I am sure I will have more questions as I go along.

Thanks

Some pieces of answers:
The oil seal should be sufficient because it is thinner, it can be positioned such that it rides on a new place on the shaft. This prevents premature leakage. The seal must be driven squarely so that the lip runs in one spot. Use assembly lube on it to keep it from wearing on startup. The shaft might need to be polished where it touches. use 600 grit and polish around the shaft, not along it.
The system should be pre charged with engine oil Either a drill type pump, or a pump oilcan can be used to push oil into the oil gallery through the poi pressure port. this can take some effort with a pump oilcan due to filling the filter, but it is cheap and effective. Make a rubber hose adapter to attach the oilcan to the threaded hole. Good luck, JimN

You can set the pump in a clean container of engine oil and rotate the drive gear until oil oozes out. Jim's advice on precharging the oil system is very good. An electric fuel pump will work fine. Hal

The oil deflector goes up against the crank gear and the pulley goes up against the deflector, pushing it tight to the crank gear.

While it is a good ides to prime the oil pump it really is self priming on these engines. When the crankcase is filled with oil the pimp is submerged an will prime itself.
