Sickle Mower

Good morning,

I have a 1947 H. I have been looking for a sickle bar mower. Any suggesstions on what kind I should get? Locally there is a person selling a John Deere #5 in fair condition for $150.00? Will that type work will with an H?

Thank-you for your suggestions.

Thank-you. That is 1 for the #5. I have read some webstes and it does appear that the #5 is popular. How do you raise and lower the arm when you get to the end of a row or to get above an obstruction? I seen some have a foot pedal, some have hydrolics, and some just have a hand lever behind you.

Thank-you again

I'd imagine that due to the lack of hydraulics on a plain A, you'd want to look for a mower with a lever lift.

JD #5 will mow well. The lift is often remade to suit a operator, or tractor. A one way IH cultivator style cylinder (Liftall system) works well. They all take engine--uity. JimN

Yes it will work great. Have the sickle sharpened and good ledger plates make a huge dirrerence. Makes a difference also what your are moying good luck buy it.

The only thing I would add here, as the owner of two JD#5 mowers and a heavy user of both, is that $150 is a scandalous price for a mower in "fair" condition. Good, working mowers of this type can be purchased for well under that at farm auctions and a lot of them are coming up. I paid $35 for my first in fair condition and $65 for the second in excellent condition. All depends on area but $150 is over the top. Don't shoot the messenger, please. I had a guy ream me out here a few years back when I suggested that he reconsider paying $350 for one. If you are going to use it, make sure you keep a couple extra pitmans on hand and carry tools on the tractor. These mowers are like the old nursery rhyme...when they are good they are very, very good. But when they are bad...(your hay gets rained on)

#5 is a good mower, and parts are still available. as far as a lift, i put a single action cylinder of an international cyclo planter marker on mine. heres a pic

Thank-you all for the comments. I will look at the mower this weekend and see how it looks. Also thank-you for sending the pictures, helps alot. There sure are some beautiful back drops and scenery out there. God bless our country!

My personal favorite is my fully mounted 1110:

Followed by the semi-mounted 120:

And a close third is the 100 trailer:

ANY IH balanced-head mower beats a pitman in my book.
