Breather Pipe Packing

Just got the 22-36 block back from it's date with the dishwasher; looks great!

However, I left the breather pipes (the ones hiding among the tappet guides) in the block as well as the packings in them. I know optimistic, but thought they might wind up clean - they were the only thing that didn't:

solid masses of crap that I don't even want to waste solvent trying to clean.

Anyone use a brass scour pad or something? Or will these clean up better than I expect? I never thought to check for new ones with Fordson House or Rice Equipment when I ordered the gaskets.

Spiffy1 I just used stainless steel wool, the fine stuff packed in tight when I did the block for my H. Bought it at the supermarket.

I used the copper wool pads in my H (I got them at paint and body shop) and seems to work fine going on 6 years now. I thought about using steel wool as well, but when I vetted this with the guys here on the board a few nixed the idea stating that steel wool will burn and copper won’t. I suspect that if you get hot enough to set the steel wool in your breather on fire, you have bigger problems to worry about.

That copper scrubby worked great [or at least know; not sure about a few days and certainly not 20 years]! With the woven pattern, I just unrolled it (but still woven) and cut off about the right looking length [about the OD of the pipe, the pad width was about twice as long as the retaining wire]. Then I was able to hook the retaining wire through the middle of the end destined to become the bottom and stick the wire in the pipe. Finally, used a long screwdriver to pack the rest down into the retaining wire.

Plenty tight, but not rock dense either.

Looks like the retaining wire stayed fairly centered on the bottom, but even if not, it'd still had to break the mesh to escape.
