Farmall A rear end noise

Farmall A F.A.A. 77497.
Just purchased it.
Rear end "noise."
In neutral, with the engine off, rolling the tractor backwards creates a "grating" noise in the rear, seeming to come from the right rear (drive shaft axis). When running the tractor in reverse, get a noise then, too. Seems to be more in the right rear. No strange noises in forward gears.
Any differential diagnosis?
Thanks,
Tom in Iowa City

Be sure the wheel mounting bolts are tight. Remove them wire brush, use silver antisieze, tighten hard, and see if it is better. If not it could be final drive or brake band dragging. JimN

I'm with Jim N. Start at the outside and work in. Rim to wheel and wheel to hub should all be tight. Beyond that it could be bearings on the bull gear or pinion or the bearing where the diff shaft passes through the tranny housing.

It wouldn't rule out bearings as the source, but with the noise only in reverse it suggests that the brake band/drum could be in play.

Tom: I agree with the others, especially the brake idea and reverse. one other quick item you can check, jack rear wheel, as jack takes the weight, watch axle in relation to final drive for looseness. Once you have it clear, try turning wheel by hand, listening for that same noise your hearing with weight on axle.

Tom,
The A's and Super A's have a rather loud gear action when running. It is louder in reverse than in a forward gear. If I could hear the noise you mention I could tell you if it is out of line, but you will not eliminate the rear end noise from a Cub, A, Super A, or B. If there is enough oil in the rear end and transmission and you have verifed that all the axels are tight as suggested by others, you noise may be completely normal. Larry
