How best to tap the holes where the mounting bolts go into the axles on an H? The holes are pretty well rusted inside and the threads are almost nonexistant. Must have sat filled with water by the prior owner(s). I"m worried about the proper depth of the hole, proper tap size, and hardness of the metal most of all. Standard tap with lots of lube? I"m guessing it will be oversized from original specs. What about Heli-Coils?

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

the threads should be cleaned as best as possible with mud and loose material removed. Then use a bottoming tap to clean the threads. The use of Tap Magic fluid will really help. Make sure the tap aligns with the existing thread. If this does not produce an acceptable thread, use of helicoil or thread sert will do it. JimN http://www dot timesert.com/

Many times. they are a very permanent solution. The threads are better than original, and will do well. They work in plastic and wood as well JimN

I'm pretty sure you'll find out that the threads are okay under all that rust and corruption. Lots of PB blaster and back-and-forth motion with the tap. 1/2 turn forward, 1/4 turn back, at most.

While I'd say the heli-coil is slightly more convenient, the time-sert is definitly more rugged. Dont forget to oil the insertion tool though [noted in the instructions if you buy a kit - essentially need to the first time to have the right tool]; IIRC they like to get stuck on it and follow it back out.

First use an air hose with a pipe style end to blow all the "stuff" out of the hole before attempting to re-thread the hole; you can use an undersized drill to clean out much of the "stuff".
The hole is about 1 1/2" deep so do not force the tap. I have 1 tractor with the bolt hole broken through into the axle opening; memory prevents knowing if it was me or someone else that did the dirty deed.
Clean hole, oil on tap, turn in 1 revolution & back out 1/2 turn, repeat, repeat. It is not easy to remove a broken tap if you over tighten it.
Once the holes are clean, put in some corks or short cap screws to keep them clean.
