Farmall H differential

I have a 1943 farmall h. The transmission is mostly apart right now. I noticed that the big bevel gear on the differential is loose. You can role it forward and backward without the rest of the differential moving and you can see the bolts move when you do it. Does this just need to be tightened or is there a pin or key broke off in there some where along the way that keeps this gear from rolling? It seems that if you were to tighten it the gear would still want to role. Any thoughts?

The large ring gear should indeed be tight to the assembly. It doesn't have a key, pin, or spline. Bolt tension locks everything together. There should also be locking tabs under the nuts to prevent them from loosening once you get everything nice and tight. If the nuts don't snug up as you tighten them, then your bolts are failing and should be replaced.

Theman is correct (no play) or movement. I think I would take some of the bolts out and check them for wear. I would also check the bolt holes to see if they have become egg shaped.

If you are near Terre Haute Indiana I have one for cheap if you take it out and the rear end is already mostly apart.
