farmall f20 blue paint

I'm not sure if all early F20's were blue. My father's early Spring 1936 F20 was the blue. In the Fall that year they started the red.

when the orignal grey paint would fade, it had a blue tint to it. i think this is whats confusing everyone.

That still has me curious, exactly who has the right color: Fordson House, McCormick-Deering.com (the two I'd expect close [in color - not formula], as both claim matching from a swatch made out of an NOS can), the light or dark gray Dupont numbers (I'd have to search to even guess at either number) claimed to be close?

mccormick deering. com came up with the color from an actual old gal. of ihc grey paint that was still usable and had it analysed to get the correct grey/blue. i guess iam sold on theres.

this is VERY VERY close to the original dark grey that was used. If you look, it has a tint of blue in it, and when it fades it becomes evn more pronounced.

only other 'blue' i know of right off is what was used on implements IE #8 plow. that blue is what i would call "Ford" blue, like their engine used ot be painted.

heres a pic of one of my F-20's painted with the 'correct' dark grey

From what I have learned after chasing around trying to find the "correct blue" for my #8 plow, after many leads I ended up talking to an old guy (almost as old as this 71 yr old) who worked at a NAPA store. He hauled out his old color book, we looked thru it thoroughly, and found NAPA had the new ID number #53 3736A. I used it and I think it looks great. This is not the same as Ford blue. I don"t know how to post a picture of my plow on this website, but can email it to you if you are curios.

I talked to alot of old timers over the years, and all I can say is it is kinda like throwing gernades --close is good enough.

You must understand that there were different shades coming off the assembly line the same day. Quality control was not done with a puter. Many tractor plants ordered from different suppliers to make sure if they ran out, they had a back up bucket of paint handy.

And during the great recession, (they were allowed to call it that back then) they said gray paint was hard to get, because the military used it for ships. Other old timers said that at a certian time gray was the only color you could get.

I have seen them in many colors, and everyone says it is wrong----till you talk to the next guy.

I'm old, and can't remember what I had for breakfast, so most of us old ones are jerking your chain if we claim to know the corect color.
