oil pan gasket removal

Hi guys.. What"s the best way to remove the residual oil pan gasket from the crankcase? I tried scraping it, but am not having much luck with it. My fat brother suggested using a torch to heat it combined with scraping. Anyone have any thoughts on that?
Thanks,
Dan

I have used my air die grinder with a mild steel wire wheel and I also have a custom air hammer "putty knife" I have been known to use. I welded a putty knife to an old air hammer chisel and run it at a lower pressure.

Thanks, Chad.. I don't have an air chisel, butI really like your innovation. I tried my angle grinder on it with a paint removal disc. It looked like it might do the job, but I was throwing stuff all over the crank. Do you think I might go back later and wash the crank with diesel when I finish grinding? Dan

stop over at napa and get some aerosol gasket remover spray. spray it on the old gasket, let it set a while and scrape it off. i'd shy away from a wire brush as it throws debris all over inside the motor.

That spray on gasket remover is pretty good stuff, but be careful to not get any of it on the paint as it will remove paint also.

Is the engine out of the tractor or still in it?? If its out and you have it up side down a wire wheel does a good job. My self I just stuff rags in the crank case to keep the stuff out.

Guess I'm old school. Years ago, I bought a top of the line gasket scraper with a long handle and a 1" blade and I keep it extremely sharp at all times. It has never failed me yet. Forget putty knives. They bend too easily. Like they say, "You get what you pay for." LOL.

After scraping off as much as you can, the best tool to get it really clean is the right angle air grinder you mentioned with a 2 inch gasket removal (3M) wheel. If you're concerned about throwing crud into the crankcase just make sure you run the grinder in a direction where the wheel throws to the outside. The most important thing you can do to ensure the new gasket/pan seal doesn't leak is cleaning the flange oil free now, so after it's shiny clean make sure you wipe it down real well with finish thinner.

You likely have the tool already; take the largest mill file you have & use the square end for a scraper. It will not get dull, has weight behind your pressure, & does a great job on stubborn areas. Be sure to have a handle in place or you will likely poke a new opening into your palm.
Plus, you can use the filing part of your "new" tool to dress up or finish the job. Remove the handle so it will lay flat on the gasket surface.
Enjoy!

Thanks, guys. I appreciate all your help. I'm a lazy sort so I think I'll try the spray first then the grinder. Thanks again. I'll let y'all know how it turns out. Dan

I use the spray and one of those 5/7 in 1 paint scrapers. Has a stiff blade and doesn't hurt to sharpen it a little more. Before that it was just a razor knife/box cutter.
