Farmall 656

There is a 656 for sale in Armada Michigan and I stopped to look at it just for fun. I used to own one years ago. The dealer mentioned that it had the "small rear end". He was told that by a prospective buyer, but had no personal knowledge as the dealership sells primarily Allis Chalmers equipment. My question is : Was the 656 produced with 2 different rear end sizes ? (sounds fishy to me....)

He may be referring to the fact that a 656 is called a "small frame" tractor as opposed to the 706, 806, 756, 856 and bigger which are called "big frame" tractors.

Yeh i have never seen a 656 with a different rear end. I have two of them a 1967 and a 1971 and they look the same to me. I also used to have a 686 and its the same rear end as the 656.

Well to my knowledge there was only one rearend made for that tractor . Now they did have a few problems with ring gears coming loose but that was a long time ago and i believe that they had a recall on them and replaced the rivets with bolts.

You could've said "Yea, those are worth a lot less than the others" and made him an offer reflecting the less desirable feature. Same as the last guy probably did ;^)

Tom, when I drove away I considered the previous guy may have been "trying to do such a thing"... hahaha... hey thanks for all the thoughtful replies ... I think we have put the matter to rest. BTW, very interesting about the rivets coming loose !

Mark: I've never seen a 656 with a different size rear end. I've seen a lot of different size rear ends in the seat of a 656. We put 16,000 hours on one, never had the rear end apart. I can tell you it took numerous rear ends in the seat to put 16,000 hours on tractor rear end. We did a major rebuild at 10,000 hours, that rear end and transmission were about the only item untouched.
