Wrench - follow up

To those who tried to give me a relevant answer to my question, thanks.
To the rest of you;
I am 77 years old & I have been a mechanic, I have plenty of wrenches, my son has a heated shop for his own business & lots more wrenches.
I was merely trying to avoid the trial & error method as much as possible by picking from the experience of those on this board.
I know that the nut on the rear is held in a slot & the shaft is what neeeds to be turned.

Please continue to ask any question at all. I didn't answer the wrench post because I saw a blue million posts. Sorry some saw an opportunity to unload. JimN

I should have answered your first post. It is verry possible someone has changed the fan assy and you mite need a metric wrench for the shaft there are so many aftermarket ones out there ya just have to take agood luck at what size is needed for the shaft. I always put the rite size on the nut as ya never know what shape it is.

i just thought it may have been a young kid or somebody pulling a prank. if this is a tractor sight, i am sure we dont want to hear about politics, god, and everyones divorses and other arguements.when i see the correct answer to a question i just leave it at that unless i can add something. there is all kinds of should be and could be stuff here.lots of good stuff also. atleast you answerd my question vern. and have a great day and keep a cool tool!

I feel your pain Vern. I very rarely visit this sight anymore because of the abundance of arrogance and close minded people that get off on gunning people down behind there keyboards. I have worked on so many different things that I wish I could say I have seen everything there is to see but, we all know we will say that to our dieing day. Hang in there Vern

Vern, sometimes straight simple and to the point can backfire, especially when people don't know your experience. Not everyone here knows you, your level of expertise, or the condition of your tractor.

As a suggestion for next time, explain that you know you could keep trying wrenches until one fit, but you're "being lazy" and would like to know what size it is before you start fishing wrenches up in there.

Happens all to often on here but it does happen. To bad people can't think about how they would like to be answered when they ask a question before they answer one for others. I know some times I answer in a way that is as simple as I can but I try to figure the person I answer may not know what there doing so I try to make it simple for them and probably some times to simple

Yeah, that too simple thing can be tough sometimes. In this instance, I don't think I know Vern from Adam, and what I've learned since, I feel a little silly about going into what wrenches other than a tappet wrench might work if he finds a tight clearance getting onto that spindle. That's one of the dangers, I guess.

On the flip side, you can assume somebody knows something and answer them as if they do, and then find out that either they don't know or, even better (or worse) they assume something about what you said and head off on a wild goose chase. One that comes to mind is a fella with ignition problems. We all made reference, among other things, to his points. He asked where to find them. We told him. He came back to say that he'd looked all around in there and didn't see anything pointy.

Now if we can just resolve that 13/16" or 7/8" issue! Until that's done, I guess the best advice I could offer Vern is to take everything he has for open end 13/16", 7/8" and 15/16" and see how he makes out. I'll be watching.

Yep sort of like when you have some one call you that needs help fixing his tractor. You do your best to take all the tools you think you need and then find that one you really need is the one you left at home some 30 miles away. BTDT and that is why I prefer to haul one home to work on it instead of driving to it to fix it

I posted this on an older thread, so I am reposting it here.

Vern, I was the first to respond to your post. I saw your number of posts and your signup date, I figured you have been around the red iron before. But when some one post a question like you did, it triggers the type responses you recieved. It seemed you were too lazy to even try to figure out what wrench would fit. It sounded like the post we all see where someone buys a tractor, has no manuals, wants to borrow your manuals, and cannot figure out how to check the oil...

Now we have that out of the way, there are two options for the tight clearance. If you have more than one wrench in the given sizes needed, you can grind one down in thickness to fit. The second option is to bite the bullet and spend some cash on a set of "service wrenchs" or "pump wrenchs". The are a little shorter, thinner, and wider than standard wrenches. They are used for applications like working on pump impellers, hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders and couplings, valves, and changing the fan belt on a SA.

Hang in there Vern, and do not take it personally. Hope you get the belt changed out.
