300 Utility PTO question

Just got done blowing snow again. We have a LOT of it here in North Dakota this year. It was heavy today and I noticed that a couple times, the RPM's of the PTO seemed to slow up??????? As soon as I stepped on the clutch it would come back up to speed - It has never done that before. How is the PTO driven? I thought I was directly driven and did not think there was a clutch???? I, by no means, a tractor mechanic, wonder if something can be adjusted or am I about to experience a repair of some sort??????? I am running a 74 inch Woods 2 stage blower with it.

Thanks in advance for advice.

There are a couple of bands inside the PTO that can be adjusted. One is for when the PTO is running and I believe the other prevents it from turning when not engaged. The two bolts on top of the PTO unit held tight with nuts make the adjustment. I don"t remember which bolt adjusts the band that holds when engaged but I adjusted mine by trial and error. Having a manual is a big help on PTO issues.

WV,
I imagine the pto is starting to slip and needs readjusting. When you push you slow the snow feed the blower and it builds up speed again.

Search the archives for Adjusting PTO, you might add 300U.

JimN and I had a good discussion on that and it might clear things up for you. Adjusting the pto correctly is simple once you follow the correct procedure. If you don't have a manual go to IH parts page for pictorial.

Mine slipped for years until I took the time to adjust it correctly.

Re: pto adjustment on 300u
Here is my take. Look at the linkage and be certain it has no lost motion, there are pins and woodruff keys in the system that can be loose. Fix if found.
Place the lever 1/2 the way between the latching points of on (up) and off (down).
Remove the little dome cover on the PTO box. Under this will be two lock nuts and two adjusting screws.
The PTO should turn by hand (engine off).
Loosen the lock nut, and turn the front screw in until you can feel the shaft start to resist turning by hand. Loosen it just until it will turn free, no more.
Do the same for the rear adjuster so that it can rotate free, but no more.
The front adjustment is the drive adjust, the rear is the brake adjust.
If the screws are down level with the adjustment lock nut top, the bands are worn, and will need replacing, or relining at a clutch shop. That is not quite the book way, but I have used it many times. JimN
