Farmall H or International 706

Evening all,
I come to you today with a hypothetical question:
Which would you buy....a Farmall H or an International 706? Both are listed for $3800 obo.

The H is a 1947. It's got what looks like either a Farmhand or an original IH loader on it, with a plow and material bucket. It's Narrow-front, with rather nice looking tin, ~50% rubber, and chains to match. 6-volt. I've been told it starts and runs beautifully. It looks pretty well un messed with...everything appears near original-quality. I'd be tempted to do the Live-Hyd upgrade if I put a 3pt on it, though, which Ideally, I would. Other than that, I can't think of anything it needs.

The 706 is the 1965 variety, with the IH282 Inline-6 diesel. It's got a two-point FastHitch, darn nice tin, with only the occasional ding and dent. Rubber looks like it's ~50% as well. Engine was rebuilt a while back, and only has a few hours on the rebuild. Wide Front. The one issue is that it doesn't run currently. The owner thinks its a fuel issue. I haven't seen the tractor in person, so I can't know for sure. The tractor sat for a year plus with no fuel in it, and hasn't started since.

I'm looking for another tractor...partially as a project, partially because it would be useful. I'd like to paint my Super-C, and would like to have something to replace it while its in the shop. Either tractor would fit that bill. It would also be handy to have a loader around the house for moving snowbanks in the winter, moving logs/branches/debris/etc. The H fits that bill as it is, the 706 would need a loader. The 706, however, with a loader/blade and a blower on the back, would probably tempt me to get into snow removal during the winter, allowing for some potential income to at least offset running costs. The 706 already has a hitch, the H would need one. The H runs though.

I'm not really looking for someone to tell me which is a better tractor, or which is a worse deal. What I'm looking for is for opinions on, given the information above, which you would personally consider if size didnt matter.

Not that it makes a huge difference, but the H is local to me (I could drive it home, if motivated enough...it's maybe 20 miles). The 706 is further away (Truck/trailer would likely be necessary).

Cheers, guys, and thanks!

H's are great tractors but ther are better deals on them than that, that is too high for an H. if you want an H do a little more shopping or talk the guy down.

i would go for the 706, since it's just been rebuilt it probally dosen't need much, loaders you can find at auctions for desent prices, and as you said you could make money with it.

The H is 1000 too high (even in CDN $) the 706 is a good buy if documents can confirm a built engine, and it is not stuck or knocking. Get a rider on the sale indicating a discount if the engine it more dammaged than it seems. JimN

Based on price alone I'd go with the 706. Good solid handy tractor. H's around here in similar shape are under 2000. I think that 706 is a little on the cheap side.

I would prefer the 706 the only thing about that one is you could spend a lot more on the 706 then on an H. Like all the other guys i think the H is over priced you should be able to find a cheaper one if thats what you are looking for.

I think I'd go with the 706 myself. Under 2 grand for a H is not hard to find. Looks as though the 706 is setup with a tow bar to hook to a pickup, why can't you tow it home that way? If ya bought it he might even let you borrow the tow bar.

Without question, get the 706. I have run both models of tractors and they are both great. That H will do an awful bunch of work, BUT If you decided that you wanted to run some bigger equipment, you'd be shopping for another tractor. The H just doesn't have the horses that the 706 does.
The 706, on the other hand, is small enough to be nimble and big enough to do anything you would ever need to do on a small farm. Just spend an extra $1000 and put a used loader on the 706 and run it off the remotes. You also have 3 point or fast hitch (which is easy to convert to 3 point). I sure miss the 706 we had on the farm. That tractor would do anything.

i agree with the others, the h is a might on the spendy side, maybe they will negotiate. the non running 706d kinda scares me. without hearing the tractor run and drive, no telling what is wrong. being a diesle, its easy to throw a buttload of money at it to get er right. i looked at tractor house , the 706's there are going from 4 to 10 grand, all runners. if the tractor wonts see a lot of use, a gasser may be a better choice for you. we had a 706 gasser years ago, good tractor, a little thirsty on fuel, but for occasional use and winter plowing, a gasser may be a better choice

Make an offer on the 706, I'd try $3,000. The H is small with an antique loader and priced high enough you could buy two for one.
