Advice when buying an M

I have no experience with Farmalls, and have dealt mostly with our massey-ferguson. I am going tomorrow to look at an M that is for sale and I would appreciate any thoughts about what to watch out for when looking the tractor over other than the obvious things that apply to any tractor. It hasn't been used much in a couple of years, but the man said he had it running for someone to look at it a couple of weeks ago. The ad says it is a 54, but I don't think that can be right unless it is a Super. Thanks in advance.

An M is a pretty solid tractor all the way around. No blatant weaknesses to speak of. So many were made that you'll never run out of (used) parts. I'd say just watch out for the usual old tractor stuff..... mike

they are great tractors only wish i had one of my own. as red said just look out for the usual stuff. the regular M's were discontinued in 52 so it would have to be a super just as you thought.

Thank you all for your thoughts. Rusted, it is the one in Carthage. Have you been out to see it? I am going out tomorrow afternoon. Have to decide whether to buy or not and then if I do I have to figure out how to get it home since I don't have a truck or trailer.

Rusted, Thank you very much for the heads-up. The asking price right now is $700, so I will have to see when I get there if it looks worth that to me. I will post the year when I get back. I have written down the serials for each year from the research files here.

Carthage, NY. I didn't make it today but will go up some evening
this week. Talked to the owner and he is willing to hold it briefly
for me.

One final thought..... if it runs good enough to verify, be sure to check and make sure it stays in 5th gear (doesn't pop out of 5th while driving it). That can be an expensive repair. It is caused by operators grinding 5th while shifting up from 4th and not making a clean shift, resulting in grinding away the teeth on 5th over the years. Good luck. mike
