low $ H stroker

has anyone out there ever tried useing a shorter rod with a smaller crankpin dai. from a different engine, along with offset grinding the crank to slightly increse the stroke without buying a high $$ stroker kit? if so, what rods did you use and what machine work was needed?

Sure its been done. Lots of different combos, but none better than a stock bearing. Lots of ways to make power, how many HP do you want? May not have to stroke it at all?? One combo sticks out in my mind of using a mazda 4 cyl rod, (like out of a B2000 pickup) they offset/weld the journals and make around a 6 inch stroker or less. ChadS

i'm not looking to get to wild with it, it still gets used for mowing. i'd like to see around 45 hp but i'd also like to gain some torque in the lower rpms. i was thinking that another 1/2 inch of stroke would get me a little more and keep it dependable. would different pistons be a better way to go? how much can be safely milled of the top off the pistons?

45 hp. Take the H block, and have 350 sleeves installed. Requires block boring, but still uses a stock IH sleeve. It will still run with full water and will be just as good as stock. It will be a 3-5/8 sleeved bore, which makes 175ci. Take the H head, and have it checked to see how thick the plate is. This will tell you about how much you can mill off and still be safe to use. I would recomend being conservative, machine .020 off it and put it together. Should make 43-45 hp with pump gas and a M carb. No stroking involved.

A 350 piston can be stroked a little. It would be the same kind of upgrade, spec wise as the M&W strokers for the M-450. 4.75 stroke, have the tops recut to fit the head, and you would have a nice workable H with a bit more, and still use IH parts when it comes time for rebuilding. You would be looking at running higher octane fuel with a stroker, unless you was to build the stroker, then set a kerosine head on it, then you should be able to run 87 in it. You should be able to build something like this for 2000 or less. JMHO, Hope this helps. ChadS
