super C- restore or not

I have a superC that my grandfather bought new and when my father quit running it in 1978 we parked it outback in the weather. I was thinking of restoring it back to usable condition to go along with my cub and 100 farmall. I know it is going to need a engine, radiator, tires and some sheetmetal. I was wondering if I should fix it or try to buy one that is running? I also wonder about how high the cost would be to get this tractor running?

I'd say RESTORE IT! Why not? If it was your Grandfather's tractor, you should restore it and not let it get scrapped or parted out. I have my Grandpa's old H and I'm so glad I restored it. They are a very special tractor and if you restore your Super C, you will not regret it!!

it sounds like it has some sentamental value, and you can't put a price on that. find a parts one that has some deasent parts and start from there, once it's done with the family history it has it will be more valuable to you that any other tractor you have. personaly i would restore it.

Wish I had one that my grandpa had the five I have I bought different places glad to have each and everyone of them. The history and enjoyment of starting them after they have sat for 10 years or longer is worth it all. Enjoy yours

Another vote to restore it. Parts seem to be plentiful on the internet.

I would at the very least take an inventory of everything you need. Then search the internet(eBay/craigslist/this website/caseih.com)for parts/prices and see if it is worth it to you.

Not sure where you are, and I don't know anything about this one, but here is a link to a "C" engine in lower Michigan.

It was your Grandfather's, you collect tractors....why wouldn't you?
Sheet metal is cheap, tires are not a problem, and engines can be had or rebuilt....did you ever see a hearse being followed by a Brink's truck on the way to the cemetery? You can't take it with you, enjoy it, restore your grandfather's tractor!!!!!!!

Sounds very familar. My Dad had a Super C that he bought new and I drove to the farm from the Dealership at age 12. The old tractor was in terrible shape including cracks in the steering housing and torque tube. From a financial perspective it was just a parts tractor at best. Well sentimental old me ended up spending something north of $8000 on it and now have a very nice $3000 tractor. But then I wouldn't take $20,000 for it. My advice is don't you dare let it go to the scrape yard--you will never be sorry you spent the time and money to fix it up and if you have children they will teasure it when your gone. Some things are just more important than money.Good luck.

Thanks for all the advice. I sat in the seat of that tractor for more hours than I want to remember. I have been thinking about restoring this tractor for several years and if it didn't have tremendous sentimental value I wouldn't even think of putting more money in it than its worth. But I believe your all right if I didn't restore it I would always regret it. I will just have to start looking for parts and get started.

i agree you should restore it .If it was me i would look around for one thats decent and take parts of it instead of buying parts all over the country. You might still have to do the engine, but its really nice to be able to rob the parts of one thats complete.

thats what my friend is doing with his grandfathers Farmall Regular, when he brought it home it was ok for one that was in a building that burned down around it. so he found a complete parts one for $150, hes a john deere guy and if it wasn't his grandpas he wouldn't even have taken a second look at it.

Restore it!! There is no hurry. Start with the engine rebuild. If I could find my dad's old 200 I would restore it (as well as the Ford Dexter and 656D IH). When he bought the 200 new I was 6 years old. He had bottom plows, cultivators, planters (corn and cotton), a one row mounted corn picker, sub-soiler, 2 point 3 point conversion, 2 point hitch duster, just to start. It was still running when my mother sold in the early 80's (He had just resleaved the engine). You will never forgive yourself if you let it go.

You should pull the engine and see if it can rebuilt unless the block is somehow broken. You can get it apart even if its stuck. I would want to use the original block if possible. Get it running then determine how much restoration you want to do. See if there's any leaks from the gear boxes. I would drain them as they may be full of water. You may want to replace the clutch
while you have the engine off. Give it a good cleaning with a pressure washer. A paint job will make it look new. Hal

Am working on a C Farmall. Pretty well done except for the sheet metal. Got to checking the grill. Thought its pretty rough. Bought one off ebay. 70 dollars. Thought that wasn't too bad. It came and I thought I would get a body man to look at it. He said buy a new one. 595 dollars. Woe is me what do I do now. 600 dollars for a grill on a tractor that is worth maybe 2000 dollars on a good day. Oh well I love it any way. Fix it up. BErnie Steffen

RDJ,
If it"s a family tractor:

You will NEVER get done spending dollars on it.

You will NEVER get over the goosebumps and grins when starting it up and driving it.

NEVER.

Does anyone know of any parts tractors close by or maybe a cheaper running one? I am located in north central Louisiana. I called about one today but it does not have the two point hitch. Would this tractor have the hyd system that I would need for parts? My two point hitch looks to be ok but I don't know about the hyd system. It's about 350 miles away but thats not a problem.

RDJ: the hydraulic system will be the same if both are Super C. All fast hitch has is an add on remote control valve for operating hitch. The manifold from pump to hydraulic unit is different with fast hitch as the manifold plumbs into remote valve, rather than to hydraulic unit.

I have been restoring my Grandfather's F504 for about two years now. It is not complete nor will it be a show tractor. I use it, which is what a tractor is for. The money I put into it plus the new FEL I figure I have about +$5000 in a $3500 tractor to date... Go for it!

RDJ Farms? I am in Natchitoches, LA... You may know my father if you have grain bins or have had work done on bins and augers. I will keep my eyes open for SC's in the area. I do not see many of the small IH's around here. My email is open!

My father may know him. I live in Dodson. My father is 73 but he still runs a liquid cattle feed business, and sells Arrow brand sacked feed too, plus looks after his cows and sheep. (I hope I can get around as good as he can when I get that age. I guess steady work never hurt anybody.)
