Letters following serial numbers on IH tractor's

I need someone to tell me where to find a book on letters. I have a 53 Super H with the letter J following the serial # Thanks in advance WILDMAN

There isn't a single place where these are compiled.

J indicates Rockford clutch. As in James Scott Rockford played by James Garner in the hit 1970's series, "The Rockford Files."

Well, not really, but it is an odd coincedence. The J indicating Rockford clutch dates as far back as 1939. There was also an Auburn clutch, indicated by an M as I recall.

acording to what i'm reading that means it had a rockford clutch in it.

The best reference I have found for letter prefix and suffix designations is a book called "International Harvester Tractor Data Book" by Guy Fay. You can find it on ebay, but usually it can be found at a lower price on one of the discount book places on the internet. It is a wealth of knowledge. mike
