Farmall H power steering

Does anyone know anything about putting either one of these pumps on an H for power steering. One is off some type of Mazda and is mounted on the back side of a Delco distributor. The other one is an electric pump off a Toyota MR2 - 12 volts and about 50 amps or so. View under "Parts & Pieces".

if i were you i'd run the distributor mounted pump. the electric one draws too many amps for a charging system on an h, youd need a real stout alternator. i am e-mailing you some manuals for tha char-lynn power steering kit that was a real common add-on to a lot of the old tractors. the other item you will need is the torque generator that puts the power to the steering shaft, steiners and oem tractor see em , they are about 500-600 for one.

The Mazda pump adaptation looks pretty good - almost like it was factory made. Presuming it has enough capacity to supply the torque motor you plan to use (Charlynn?) I suspect it would work well and be trouble-free.

However the Toyota electric pump I'd avoid for a couple reasons:

1 - You'll need a 12 volt alternator conversion. Also the alternator would need to be fairly high-capacity (60 amp or greater) to work well.

3 - I'd be concerned about the electric pump's longevity in tractor service! Keep in mind in a car that pump probably runs only occasionally and very briefly - like when parking. However on your average tractor the power steering (and hence the pump) must work hard pretty much continuously. I suspect the pump motor would heat up quickly and not last very long.

We have an older automotive style power steering pump on an H (maybe Vickers?) and another hydraulic type on a M. Both have plenty of pressure for the torque generator. The H pump has a tall canister on top which required cutting a hole in the hood. It looks OK. That"s all they had at the time and needed PS for loader work. I"ll take some pictures and post them. On both tractors the pump is installed on the left side of the engine, out of the way and tucked neatly under the hood.

Elsie71,

If you can find the proper Delco distributor, and can get the adapter for the Mazda pump figured out, there's no reason you couldn't make that work.

I sincerely doubt that the adapter is available as a product.

Steve. Where did you get that extension coupling? The one on the steering wheel side of the shaft.(output side of T/G). I'm running without that extension and the steering wheel is way forward.

Came with the kit. I'll bet Mike over at steelwheelranch DOT com can get you one.

Here's the pictures of my 1953 Farmall H with power steering. I asked my Grandfather about it. When he bought the tractor from his sister after she stopped farming, he had a M&W p/s kit installed by a local IH dealer back in the late 50s. It has a Char-Lynn torque generator. This tractor was the main loader tractor until a Farmall M was purchased in 1983. I bought the H from my grandparents 2 years ago to keep it in the family and plan to restore it, but still use for farming. It also has the M&W pump for live hydraulics.
