IH M with Aux 9 Speed Transmission.

I just read article on-line about M&W Gear Co in the late 1940"s installing Aux 9 Speed Trans Kit in IH Ms. I never heard this before? Have experience concerning the large gap between 4th & 5th gears

i have an m+w 9 speed on one of my m"s. really makes the tractor handy for transport. pulling a wagon any distance in 4th can get real boring after a short period of time, kick in the 9 speed and you"d think you were mario spaghetti in the indy 500.

Back in the day the M was not really usable with a rotary hoe in fourth, and fifth was too fast. Third gear in high range was about right.

Dad had a 1951 M with the M&W nine-speed, the "Super M" overhaul kit with larger pistons and thinner sleeves, and the governor turned up. The IH dealer's dyno showed 54 hp.

When I was thirteen, it was a big deal to get to drive it. Wish I had one now, but it would be under a blue tarp, getting in the way at my house.

"Third gear in high range was about right."
I take it that the Aux Trans primarily split the gears with adding High/Low ranges?
Your father's tractor was a unusual in its day! I can see how it was very special to you.

Fifth is always direct drive (input shaft to output shaft) the 9 speed changed the ratio of the countershaft. Thus there were in sequence of slow to fast 1 low 2low 3low 4low 1high 2high 3high 4high 5th.
The 9speed filled in the gap between 4th and 5th.
Low in the above description is standard gear ratios as made by IH. High results from the 9 speed. JimN

Hi, When you run in the m&w gears between 4th & 5th it doubles your pto speed also. Steve IL

M&W, Behlen and Heisler made the 9 spd kits. In an M with 12-38 tires, running 1650rpm, the high will be 7-9-11 and 13 mph. Almost every M in my area has the 9 spd all being the M&W. I have 3 M's and 1 H with the 9spd's. Just sold and shipped one for an H.

My M has a nine speed, Heisleer I believe, the lever is on the left side. It also has a lever on the right that unhooks the hydraulic pump. I guess because it turns twice as fast and will save wear in high range. Bernie Steffen

I remember the day he bought it and the day he sold it. Life was a lot different then. Running an M all day would put a set of big shoulders on a guy, but that's how all the guys were that I grew up with.
