1066 Steering ISSUE

I have a 1976 1066 International. I have all the manuals that go with it. i have looked through them but still not sure where to start to tear in to this thing.

The problem. I bought this tractor and it ran and steered fine. It sat for a week. I lost ALL steering. The steering wheel would just turn and no response from wheels at all. I talked to someone else and they said to go forward and reverse and man handle the steering wheel and see if it would finally starting steering. i did this for about 5 minutes after it got good and hot and it finally started steering great. next day steering fine and next day steering fine. then i let it sit for a week and NO steering again at ALL. ( I have changed hydraulic fluid and filter as well)

So I am not sure where to start to fix this. I have looked at the master control vavle that connects to the steering wheel under the dash but I am not sure if that is where I need to start or not.

Sorry to be so long. Just want to give you all the facts so you can guide me in the right direction.

Thanks,

Les

Let try this first before ya start twisten nuts and bolts. Ad three to five gallon of hy tran and see if this helps things Then , the extra oil in the system will not hurt a thing. IF this does not help well go from there .

Tractor Vet or anyone else,

I added the extra 5 gallons of hydrolauic fluid. Nothing happened. So what should I try next.

Thanks,

Les

Well Guess it is time to get a I T manual and set down and read up on the MCV valve as ya may have a sticking regulator valve and get some fine and i do mean fine emery cloth like 600 grit or finer in case ya have to do some polishing of the spools . And ya might want to consider a MCV spring and gskt kit along with a new pump since you are going to be there .A set of dial calipers is something else ya will need to check spring length and a gauge to check pressure . OR if this is a bit more then ya want to do then let someone in your area do it that knows what he is doing and has done this before .

Sounds to me like maybe you've got a leak somewhere that's letting air in and causing the steering system to drain down. Working the steering wheel restores the prime to the system. The hand pump is way up high on the steering column, lots of fall for the fluid to drift down.

Is she a leaker? You got an unexplained drip of hytran anywhere around the operator's platform?

No it is not a leaker at all. It has a small drip near the mcv outside housing under neath the clutch housing.

I was wondering if you thought it could be the mcv pump? I was talking to someone else that stopped by and was telling him
My troubles. He thought the pump was not working right. This is not a hydrostatic tractor it is gear driven so the pump according to
The it manual should be producing 9 gpm. Do you think that is my problem? Not sure where to tear into first.

Thanks

Les

I am looking at the manual right now. Can
That 9gpm pump be rebuilt or is better to purchase
A new pump. Looking at the picture it looks like it has a
Inner thrust plate, pressure diaphragm and drive and driven gears.

Thanks

Les
