1950 H engine rebuild advice

While I wait for some odds & ends to finish up my 43 H, I started my 50 H engine rebuild.

I want to try and document all the steps in putting this engine together, taking photos as I go along.

All I know is from what I took apart, and reading the various tractor books and parts book on putting this back together.
I am sure I will have lots of questions.

Here is where I am at
Rebuild Photos

Am I doing ok in the order things should be installed?
What about the main cap bearing bolts, do I re-wire them? If so what wire do I use and how do I wrap it? Or do I use Loc-Tite?

What is next after what I have put in now, sleeves & pistons?

Keep that advice coming and let me know if something is not correct.

You twist that safety wire from one bolt to the other and the Air Force used a tool for doing it and made it very neat. We did it by hand. I don't know why you couldn't use cotter pins they should serve the same purpose. You can prime your oil pump and install it. Once everything is completed in the lower block you can install the pan, timing gear cover and damper pulley. You can install the valve tappets too. Hal

randy, you can get the saftey wire from your engine guy or machine shop. take an old ice with you for the right size. its not just regular baling wire. when you wrap the bolts, you want the wire routed so it holds the bolts from unscrewing. kind of hard to explain but if you look at them installed imagine one bolt loosening, you want the wire to pass so it tries to tighten the other bolt.

Yes on the safety wire. Any decent auto parts store will have some. I used .060" dia. stainless steel wire purchased from McMaster Carr for the mains on my '51 H. In a nutshell, the wires leaving the bolt head should be such that the tension on them will prevent counter-clockwise rotation. Then put a few twists between the bolt heads then put one wire through the second bolt head so that (again) any tension in the wire is trying to tighten the bolt. A picture would be worth a thousand words here but I don't have a good one to link to. You might drop "safety wiring" into a search engine for a better idea.

yes you could use cotter pins if it was castle nuts, but in this case i believe the bolt head is drilled to use wire. it can be stainless steel also. use those EL TORO pliers and it does a neet job.

If they're bolts you couldn't use cotter pins. I was thinking studs with nuts. Guess he will have to use safety wire. That's not a hard job to use safety wire. Hal

I know it doesnt help much, but I seriously envy your shop!

And thanks for all the pictures. Im probably going to have to go through this soon on the BN's that I picked up, and even though its not all the same, its very helpful to see whats involved in stripping an engine down and building it back up!
