I occasionally sell items in the U.S. and Canada using several free classified and dedicated topic websites and a few times on ebay. The payment method I have used on all sales is Postal Money Order and I have never had a problem. Buyer sends money, I send product. Simple as that. And if you read my Buyers and Sellers Suggestions you know that I take common sense precautions.

I learned today that in their wisdom of arrogance ebay has decided to gain control of all revenue crossing their website by forcing all customers to use their paypal company for all transactions. I refuse to allow pay pal to earn interest on my money while playing nursemaid over my dealings and then deciding when and if I should receive payment for my goods. I will handle my own due diligence. Think of the thousands of dollars ebay will now earn everyday using your money and then charging selling fees on top of that. They tried to pull the same thing in Australia and the govt. there told them to forget it, no way could they force Australian users into using pay pal.
Their gustapo type arrogance is disgusting.
I don’t really need them anyway, but I have made the decision to never use ebay again for any reason. And you know what, it feels pretty good.

It was cra@ like that that made me stop selling on ebay 4 years ago. I see they are only getting more and more like the Kremlin!

You are not the first to give up on ebay, and hopefully not the last. I quit selling there quite some time ago, and I only go there to buy when I am looking for an extreme bargain.

I know it's geared toward local sales, but I really wish Craigslist was better refined for nationwide a search. I have bought things on rare occasion there and had to send a postal money order; usually feel out the seller with a couple phone calls first, and still always nervous when the letter goes in the box, but thus far have always had honest sellers.

Ebay, I sure like searching, and I do like the convenience of PayPal, but it was a bit spooky when Ebay took over PayPal - really seems like a monopoly if that is the only payment they'll allow!

I almost survived using Ebay years back. One of the last sales I had was a bust, the guy complained to Paypal about something not being right, I offered for him to return it, instead he stopped payment on Paypal. Several emails later I settled for cents on the dollar because this guy knew the system better than me. Luckily it was not a high dollar item, but put a sour taste in my mouth.

You can still accept other forms of payment besides PayPal, You just can't post it in your listngs. You can pay for items by money orders if you ask the seller if he will accept that form of payment.

I don't see the problem with Paypal. You tie it in with your local bank account or one dedicated to eBay activity. When Paypal tells you that the item has been paid for, go to your Paypal account and immediately transfer the money.

It is very convenient for buyers. With a few clicks, the sale can be completed. That sure beats writing and mailing a check or chasing after a money order.

To each his own. I am amazed at the prejudice on these forums against eBay. When buying, I always get a good deal with little effort. When selling, I only offer rare items that will attact interest. I have had nearly 100 transactions with no problems.

No doubt fairly safe compared to money orders ect., but the idea of Ebay not just owning it but then demanding it does give one pause as to the monopoly, litterally as well as Ebay as the sole recourse for a deal gone bad.

It depends on which end you are on I Guess. I buy quite a few things on E Bay and if seller does not take Pay Pal I will not bid. Like you say buyer sends money order and I ship and i am sure you will but if I send money order and seller does not ship I am screwed with Pay Pal I have some recourse.I have payed with Pay Pal for a lot a things at other places than E Bay maybe I am naieve but I feel better paying with Pay Pal than sending credit card information on line. Most that I buy from E Bay is on E Bay motors and I do not think seller is required to take Pay Pal on E Bay motors.

They "allow" the use of Propay and merchant credit card systems. You can also specify cash on pickup.

How many bad checks or fake cashier's checks can you afford to eat? I get spammers offering alternative payment methods all the time.
Pay here.

I realy don't have problems with eBay and PayPal.It's safe and just as with every bank they want to make some profit.I purchased most of my MV parts (even some original Farmall rare ones)via eBay and payment was never a problem.Tractorfolks with bad intentions are rare on ebay.Believe me:my suppliers always shipped the items and not any problem. Some people complain always.Maybe they don't know how it exactly works.........Should that be the reason?????I will continue for sure.

This is analagous to a merchant accepting a credit card.

The merchant gets their cash instantly & electronically with no issues as to whether the payment is good or sour. The credit card company then assumes the liability and hassle of collecting from the buyer for which they get a %.

Any merchant can refuse to accept Visa/MC/Amex by choice to avoid the fees but they are also limiting the number of customers they can accomodate and definitely cut down on the number of "impulse" purchases.

Don't get the wrong idea, I'm not defending either ebay or Paypal, but the system is not crooked or slanted, it has rules and there's some benefit for using it.

My understanding is that ebay determined that their "high profit" business was the "power sellers" who sell low-cost items at incredible rates, and they made relatively little from the masses selling oddities and antiquities.....and so they catered with predjudice to the high-margin business.....just like any good MBA would have them do.

There are several alternatives like Craigs etc. The one I like is Kijiji.
It is simple to use, no hassle and the ads last for like 60 days and then they email you and ask if you would like to relist it and all it takes is a click.

As far as eating bum money orders or cashiers checks.
I take the MO to the post office, cash it, then send the item.
The post office always checks the MO number and if it is good they give me my money. (I never had a bad one yet) But even if it is bad, I still have the item and will not send it unless I have converted payment into cash.

If your method suits you that is fine but what you are saying IMO is I trust no one but everyone that buys from me must trust me. If your customers do not mind driving 20 mile or whatever round trip to post office and buying money order and stamp instead of handling everthing setting at computer good for you.

One last thing on ebay. A friend of mine sold a $300.00 antique doll to a woman in France. I drove her to the PO when she mailed it. She took insurance and signature required delivery.
The woman claimed she never received it even tho the post office had a signature that was forwarded to ebay. Pay Pal returned the buyers $300 even with the evidence that it was delivered. My friend is out the doll and the money because of pay pal.
As far as the trust issue, the more people you throw into the mix the more chance for problems. And you are correct, I know that I can be trusted to send the item when I have the cash. I make sure the buyer has every bit of info on me that he wants, including hard wire telephone number which is a big deal in todays no name cellphone world. In all the sales I have completed over the internet the one and only problem I have had with a buyer was on ebay and it was compounded by ebay interference and inconsitant policies.
There is a line in an old BB King song," The only one that loves me is my mother, and sometimes I think she might be jivin."

(quoted from post at 11:10:31 01/14/09) Sure did stop bad checks and phony money orders and such. What fee do you pay at an auction.

I pay ZERO fees at an auction. Fees are to be paid by the SELLER not the buyer.

I refuse to go to any auction sale that has a "buyer's premium" because it is the seller's responsibility to pay for the service of the auctioneer, not mine.

I have had no problems with eBay and PayPal has saved my wife and I some considerable amounts of money when no product has shown up. Buying or selling, I've had good experience with over 200 transactions to date.

Steven,
We agree to disagree on pay pal/ebay but I absolutely agree with you on the buyers premium at an auction. The auctioneer can not get the seller to anti up enough percentage so he takes it out on the buyer. I refuse to go to those also.
It's same as automatic adding a gratuity at a restaurant. To me that's just plain arrogant and rude.
