Hey EZ! about bearings

I just got going through receipts from the restoration on my BN and remembered your remark about the price of bearings on that differential shaft and how I thought it sounded kind of steep.

Here's what I dug up, bearing in mind that this was back in '02

ST 202 (IH-C-245) - bearing supporting the shaft on the tranny end - $18.50

ST 205 A (IH-C-235) - inner bearing on shaft thru final drive - $11.00

ST 278 (IH-L-250) - outer bearing on shaft thru final drive - $44.25 NO IDEA what makes this one so precious!

As far as the numbers, the ST numbers are what are listed in the number column in the parts catalog, and matched the numbers on my invoice from Bermuda Ken & Co. The numbers in parens are listed in parens in the catalog after the description of the part, and matched the numbers on the bearings that I took out, so I'm guessing there was a change in part number, maybe associated with a change in manufacturer, somwhere along the line.

Bottom line, though, and my point in posting, is that even if the part numbers for yours are different, the bearings wouldn't/shouldn't be so different. I put just under $75 per side into three bearings for each side, <$150 total. I suppose in the span of six years that will have gone up and perhaps substantially, but $130 for any single bearing seems way out of line.

If somebody is sticking to that price, I'd suggest you call Ken at Carter & Gruenewald or your favorite CaseIHNHFord dealer and see if they can do better.

A wild tangent to your point, but it should make those prices seem much better when compared to the prices of mains in a 15-30/22-36:

List price is around $500 for the rear and not much better on front! These can be had for about half of that - especially in a standard bearing instead of max-capacity (same dimensions, no fill slots to get additional balls). Of course, a little ebay time, and I stumbled across a pair for much less yet, but I'd still rather had your prices!

Yeeeoowwwcchhh!

DOIRC that those were ball bearings?

That's all the ones I'm referring to are, and are for a slow turning differential shaft.

DOIRC?

Anyway, yep they're ball bearing. IIRC 90X190X43mm (discussed here a long time ago, but yes they're metric) on the rear.

Not positive, but I heard one or the other is still current for IH, used somewhere in the transmission [I think] on a newer [not sure which either but probably pre-Case] tractor.

Shoulda been DIRC as in "Do I" and any recollection I might have would likely have been from a thread a short time ago where I asked if perhaps there were poured babbitt bearings in the old pre-Regular tractors. Might be the same thread you were thinking of.

Not sure if it was 10-20 or 22-36 mains, but you couldn't buy them during WW2. IH had to pull them from dealers as the same bearings were used in a radial aircraft engine of some sort.

I think I recall that thread, but the one I was thinking of was exclusively to someones surprise at metric bearings in older tractors. Long before I signed on here though; I found it in the archives or maybe google a while back.

Scotty,
Thanks for the heads up.
I"ll have to look up my invoice for the Cub outers. Methinks the price may have been high as that bearing comes connected to the retainer which bolts up to the final drive. The retainer on the 130 looks like a heavy piece. I"m guessing the bearing sits in there?

Thanks again for the concerns and comments.

Yer welcome. And I apologize for the unintentional "bearing in mind" pun. Didn't catch it until just now. What a wit!

Yep, that cage is pretty rugged and hefty for no bigger than it is. It's the one on the left of my BN that won't free up. But it should just turn out of there for you.

Keep track of any shims and happy wrenchin'!

Scotty,
Just got the prices for bearings in trans of 130 from Case IH in southern Ontario.

ST 202 (Diff bearing) 2 req'd @ 46.93ea.

ST 205A $36.13..... 1 req'd.

ST 246 (Bearing w/snap ring) $40.65... 1 req'd

49 339 D (Bearing w/ inner race) No stock...$79.53

ST 213 T $27.76......1 req'd.

Thrust washers for the diff are no longer available.

The oil seals for the trans shafts are $30.91

So as you can see, these are some heavy products. The prices are CDN Funds. The rebuild of the transmission alone will be upwards of $400.
I could save a few $ by making some of my own gaskets, but not enough for the time saved.

Isn't this fun!
