Where to get a GOOD battery to fit A, BN, SC battery box

Anyone know who makes a good one? The smallest 6v ones at the CaseIH dealer are just barely too big to fit in the box. Can I get a smaller one from IH? If so does anyone have the part #? Otherwise, how about a good Interstate, or Delco or something. No cheap junk, please. Tired of cheap batteries that only last a year or two.

It should just be a plain old Group 1 6v battery, with Group 1 being the standard for the case size.

Being as they're all made by just a few companies, I don't know how much variance there is in quality/longevity. I've got one that I believe Exide made for the CarQuest chain that's been going strong for 7 years, through bitter cold and occasionally suffering through charging system issues on my SuperC. The other, in my BN came from NAPA. We'll see how it does.

If you have a favorite brand the key will be Group 1 to get it to fit into the box.
Battery case sizes

This is a common problem.

Today's Group 1 batteries are somewhat bigger than the originals. Mostly taller, which can cause a problem with the box lid on tractors like the Cub.

I have the same issue. Spent the long buck for the 4-piece battery box for my Super A. Group 1 battery, says so right on the battery.

I tried to install the box, but the battery is too tall. I can't bolt the battery box to the steering post because there isn't room enough between the battery and the steering post to get the bolt in. The lid would short out on the battery terminals too, so it's sitting on a pile in my shed.

I had the problem of battery box lid not fitting on my H also. The group 1 6 v was too tall, by about 3/4 of an inch. I used the 4 1/2 sander on the battery terminal and took them down 1/2 inch. Then I sanded the rubber bumpers down until the lid would cover the box.

[b:1d7f5344dd]Hi,
I use CBM1A batteries from Case IH. They seem to fit just fine in my Super C and Super H. Had no trouble with lids etc.

I found this article from Hemmings interesting and think it might help. At the bottom are two places that carry restoration batteries that should have one that will fit if you dont find one some other place.

Scotty, if you're talking to me then probably. I have lots of problems, though I don't often air them here unless I consider them interesting enough...

I did ask about the stability of the steering post, and if the battery box would fix it. Mine moves around if pulled on hard enough; it's bolted down and appears to be solid. Hugh confirmed that it would, so I bought the parts.

Twice now I've tried to install that battery box and twice now I've had to quit in disgust. First problem is the holes in the steering post are stripped out. Second problem is the battery is too tall.

If the battery box was not designed to lift the battery up off the torque tube, there would be plenty of room.

Frankly I would be happier with a simple tray and hold down, but the battery isn't going anywhere now.
