Replaced the packing around the input shaft to the trans and it still leaks. Hate to tighten the nut up too tight, Is there any secrets to getting it properly sealed?? Thanks for all the help

Cowboy,What weight of oil are you using.sometimes 140 is not thick enough,I have a friend that uses his F20 every day and he uses 180 from case, never has a problem

Was your new rope packing a snug fit when you placed it inside the input shaft? How many revolutions did you make with the rope? These are all important factors to know. Usually you have to tighten up the flange pretty darned tight to keep the seal from leaking. However if you use a wrong sized rope you may never get it to pack down tight enough. Let us know.

So how many wraps with the rope should there be? I ask because I need to replace the PTO shaft seal on my F14. And while were at it, is it some kind of special rope seal?

Doug,I really dont know,I never had to replace one,my reg, does leak a little but I refuse to paint it so it just makes it look older.Rice equ sells them.I always thought they were one peice

On my regular I installed lip seals on the PTO & belt pulley shafts. It might work on the input as well.

Measured OD of shaft & ID (minor diameter) of casting on tractor. Use a bearing house to find a good match. Gooped up the seal OD with silicone and pushed it in. Then cut a ring from large pipe that approximated the seal OD. Put the in ring in, and then the packing nut to hold seal in place.

Hope this explanation makes sense. Wish I had a photo, but can try to walk you thru it if you need.

I dont know that there is a certain number of times, but I replaced the rope seal on the PTO of my F-12. I ordered the seal from the Fordson House for about $7, Im not sure if its anything special, but they had it so I got with some other parts. All I did was remove the big nut that holds the rope in place, wrapped the rope around without overlapping it and than butted the nut up and tightened it snug with a wrench. Nothing Special and it has yet to leak on me. Hope this helps you.

Not sure how many wraps it was but it fit pretty snug. Bought the rope from Rice Equip. I'll try to tighten it up a little more. But where would you get 180 weight?? If that doesnt work I'll try and put the new style seal in, pretty neat trick. Thanks to all for the great advice.
