Farmall 140 tractor

I have owned an older Farmall 140 for about 30 years that the serial plate for the tractor is missing. It has not been cranked for at least 10 - 12 years. We were lucky that the engine was not stuck, my son is wanting to restore it. We want to identify it for the accuracy in ordering parts. Where will the engine serial number be located. I'm hoping that we can id the year by that number.

The engine number is on the block on a raised pad near #1 plug. The numbers (I believe) are not in sequence with serial # of tractor. Casting codes are the best they consist of MM+DD+Letter with the plus marks as screw heads that held in the date plate on the patterns. The Letter will be a single alphabet letter. find three or so on castings to help us id the date of production (which is always a bit later than the casting date. JimN

WE found:71057 on a raised 2.5 x 3/4 inch block under #1 plug. There are no alphabet letters. These numbers are on the left bottom corner.

The last chassis serial was 66790 (1979), looks like you have a late model, although the C123 in your tractor was used in many other models. The codes Jim mentioned are not with the serial number. Look for the month*day*year in cast in raised letters (not stamped) on the engine block and other castings. I can't help you on the letters, because my list stopped in 1958. Not sure if they continued in consecutive order after that time. Someone will know.

d bridges: I can help you a bit based on that engine serial number. Your tractor is a 1958 or 1959 model, probably around the 2500 th one built. 140 and 240 used a common sequence of engine serial numbers. 140-501 had engine 65046, F240-501 had engine 65032 and I240-501 had engine 67017. I'm assuming there were as many 140 as F240 and I240 combined or close.

Your casting date codes should be D for 1958 or E for 1959.

This might help a little. The early 140s had a pull rod to start it. In about 1963 or 1964 they went to a key start with a push button. In the mid 1970s they changed that to just a key start. The early 140s were 6 volt. The ones built in 1977 and later came with an altenator. I have 4 140s so if you need help with some thing let me know and i will try to help you. [email protected]

Hugh, thanks for answering that. I qualified my "late model" statement because of the length of time the C123 was used, and wasn't sure how consecutive the numbers were. Without giving exact numbers, Ken Updike's data book says about 3600 Farmall 240's were built, over 10000 utilities, the total is only 13000-14000 which is less than 25% of the 140 production. As you know 140's were built for a LONG time.

I think the tractor is even earlier than what Hugh said. At least in early production, there were more I-240Us built than F-140 and F-240 put together. That engine number probably fell somewhere between serial numbers 1256 and 1579 ( Sept '58 ). This is assuming the original engine in the tractor. Check the date codes as already suggested. 1958 was "D".
