I have a"57 IHC 350 U. II has been converted to 12 volt -alternator system .I need a sketch for correct Alt. wiring . Amp. says it is charging , but after running App. one hour it loses power , use power pack .or charge battery it runs fine .
Thanks for any assistance .

If the amp guage is still attached in the same polarity as it was when it was 6v. The gauge reads backwards. Turn on the ignition and carefully watsh the gauge if it moves to a tiny bit of charge, it is backwards. If the lights work, turning them on (with engine off) will also show charge with the gauge backwards. The proper wiring depends on which alternator it has, out of what vehicle. so giving directions must wait until we get that info. We can get through all types, we just cant give info that could let the smoke out of components. We also need to know which way the battery is installed. (which post is ground) JimN

The lighting wire should (or can) be connected directly to the load side of the Amp meter. Make sure the amp meter is connected so loads read discharge (needle to left). The Big screw terminal on the Alternator goes to the same terminal (load side of amp meter). The #2 spade terminal on alt. goes to the big screw terminal on alt. also. The #1 terminal should go to a wire attached to a diode with a 3 amp capacity and 400piv rating with the diode placed so the banded end is toward the alt terminal. the other end to the ignition wire going to the coil or to the ballast resistor (not after the resistor) A 10 to 15 ohm resistor can also be used in this location (10 watt) A side marker lamp can also be used as an idiot light in this location (it must not be grounded, one lead of the light must go to the alt #1 terminal, the other to the ignition switch, or ignition coil before a ballast resistor. This setup causes the alternator to start charging I would put a 70 amp Fuse link in the wire going to the Amp Meter from the start switch. JimN

Here is the pic. The diode can be replaced as in my other post. If using a LED (instead of a marker light), it must be across a resistor because it will not carry enough current to excite the alternator. The fuse link should be rated for 10% more than the alt output. (usually stamped into the alt frame) best of luck, JimN
