Farmall 340

I have enjoyed this website and love the Red Paint stuff.

H's, M's, 300, 400, etc....have not seen anything about 340. Spent a lot of hours on one as a kid growing up...mowing/baling hay. Really liked the TA for both operations.

Are 340's NOT that popular, or in short supply?

Comments, please.

Snoop,

Here in SE Indiana, there were several of 340 utilities on the farms around. My uncle had one and ground feed with it, although you had to feed the corn in slowly. It would do it without overheating, though. Handy tractor--- the only thing his could have used was power steering, which I think was an option. There are still 3 utilities I know of in use. As for the row crops, I can't recall anyone around here ever having one, but there were several 504 row crops.

They come up occasionally, around 20000 International and Farmall models built. Compare that to 390000 H's and 290000 M's, etc. Another reason is that it is a more modern tractor, costs more to buy, and that many people on this forum are broke, like me. I have never seen one in western KS, would consider one for a "reasonable"price.

Snoop, You just must not be looking on here at the right time ! Occasionally, there`s posts on 340`s on here,it just kinda goes in streaks. They sure weren`t produced in the numbers that the letter or hundred series were ,so logic says not as many fellows are working on or having problems with `em as the more popular models and that is what most of the posts are about on here. I have a Farmall 340 WF and PS and I love everything about it,except maybe , the extremely slow reverse. A very handy little tractor,I use it with my 6 ft. bush hog and it works great for that. All the "big tractor " features of that time period in a smaller machine. Mark

They don`t bring a great premium around here ,somewhere in the $2500-3000 range will get you a decent one. That size of tractor wasn`t probably a very hot seller in plains states.

There are a few posts about them once in a while, but the H's, M's, 300, 400, etc were very popular so thats why there are many discussions about them.

Thanks for comments...the one I was familiar with was real early 60's. I was aware of INTERNATIONAL 340 that was "wide" front...and a bit lower to ground than the FARMALL (trike) version I operated. Was there ever a diesel version made?

The FARMALL had 2 pt. Fast Hitch...I'm not sure about INTERNATIONAL.

Seems to me 340 would have been an evolution from the H.

Yep, there was a diesel version of both Farmall and utility . It was the D-166 engine. Both the Farmall and utility had either the fast hitch or the 3 pt. fast hitch. The utility also could have had the industrial 3pt.

I have two of the Farmall 340 gas models, one with wide front and the other trike double wheel. Had a single front on it when I got it but just didn't like the look. Very handy tractors to do chores and haying work. Both have power steering, fast hitch with 3 pt conversions, live hydraulics and ipto. Probably the nicest cultivator rig I've used and with the TA is a handy small easy to handle rig. I usually take one or the other to plow day pulling a fast hitch 2-16's plow. I just finished painting and restoring one last week. have to put the emblems on yet and then I may put the other one up for sale?? Migraine

My dad just bought a 340 row crop gas. I also have a 340 utility diesel. Would like to find a row crop diesel? They are little handy tractors.

Evolution wise, the H was followed down the line by the 460... the 340 was probably more in line HP wise, but seemed to fit between the C and H lines. C, SC, 200,230,240 grew up HP wise, as did the H, SH, 300, 350, 460. The 340 was sort of a new "in betweeen series". Always thought I would like them because of the TA available as an option, but never ran one.

The $2500 is nearly a thousand more than a letter series in the same condition. I think what I would like to have (just 'cause) is a 240 utility, never seen one of those either. Not many 50's and 60's tractors still in use around here, see a few H's and M's at auctions, that's about it. I did buy a 460 Hi Utility locally, only one of those I have ever seen -- really does not fit our type of farming, though.

I realize that they cost maybe a grand more or so than a H or M,but I also feel it`s a more versatile and user friendly tractor with a TA,live hydraulics, live pto, fast hitch and power steering ,if so equipped.340 sure won`t win the horsepower battle against an M or even H though !! 240U`s are nice tractors also and I`d love to find a 460 Hi Utility around here- always wanted one.

Seems to me 340 would have been an evolution from the H.

The 340 is actually not directly descended from a letter series. It's actually unique in that respect.

As I understand it, H based tractors continually grew in horsepower, but the C based tractors remained pretty much stagnant. A HP gap developed between the 230 and 350, which only got bigger between the 240 and 460.

The 340 was a mostly-new design, but if you were to ask me, it more closely related to the C than the H. Like the C, it does not have a frame.

Ya from what Ive heard and read the 340s used to be really common in Minnesota and Wisconsin as county tractors back in the day. Thats where our 340U came from was county surplus auction. Decent tractor for their size, pretty good power to weight ratio. Ours is mainly used for mowing and snow clearing. Nice little tractor if you ask me. I actually like the slower reverse, works nice for snowblowing. Wish ours had power steering, but hey ya cant have everything. Red and white now, but used to be golden yellow back in the day.

I have a 340 utility with an IH 2000 loader. It has power steering, IPTO, factory 3 pt and no TA. I got it for moving horse manure but use it for nearly everything. Reverse is pretty slow, but it keeps me out of trouble. I just need to fix a zillion leaks and rebuild the slightly slipping PTO. Then find a new hood, then replace the seat, then paint it...

I had not seen a 240U before I bought one last summer. I have seen pictures of them, but mine has bigger tires on the rear and truck tires on front. Also has a really heavy duty IH loader on it that had been "divorced" from the internal hydraulics and a larger pump drives off the front of the engine. A valve was added to the loader and an aftermarket (Char-Lynn?) torquemotor PS added to the internal hydraulic system with a priority flow divider. Also has the factory 3 point in place of the fast hitch and is (partially) converted to 12V.
Anyone have the side panels for the hood?
