1586 slips out of reverse

what do i need to do to fix this,it will slip out of reverse then if you move it up a little to the sweet spot its fine, its the only gear that slips,im thinking of selling so would like to take care of problem.......thanks john

Well the first place i would take a peak at it the rev shift fork . ya can do this by removing the cover with the clipped corner on the left side or the rear end housing behind the steps , you will loose about a gallon of hy tran when ya pull this cover . check and see if by chance that maybe that shift fork may have broken one of the ears off and if so a bit more tear down will be required to fix it.

If you park it with the back right corner low you may not lose any. But it might be a bit cold for doing this outside.

I would pull that cover also like tractor vet said, however all the 86 series we sold around here have the darn aux fuel tank in the way making a simple job much more difficult. May be as simple as a loose lever or link on the top of the range trans cover but there again if it has the aux fuel tank they are harder to see and check.

We had trouble with the snap ring on our 786 range shifter shaft popping off, we finally cut a hatch in the side of the cab, blew 2 holes through a cover plate and the cab, tacked a bolt out through the cab in each one to hold it on. Don't know how we finally fixed the snap ring.

When it came apart it wouldn't shift.
