Here's what my tranny looks like. You can see the broken slinger gear and parts of it's teeth laying on the bottom. How bad are those worn gears?

A couple of my tractors have gears that are 30% worn. They work fine and don't make noise. If you want them to be absolutely like new, then replace them. But other than the chipped tooth one, those gears will last a LONG time. But examine those gears closely and make sure they are just worn and not chipped.

Dont worry about the slinger inless you will be using the pto as it throws the oil for the pto. Early model As Bs didnt even have the slinger gear. Tranny probably had some moisture at some time and froze or those teeth wouldnt be broken as the gear is some sort of pit metal. Used ones usually run around 60 and you dont want to hear the price of new. Those other gears will last a long time if anything needs to be changed it would be the input bearing and seal. I would use 150wt gear lube it will quiet it down a bunch.

Gene,
This tractor has no pto. Without the slinger, would any oil be moving around in idle? Something has to be spinning to move the slinger.
Thanks for looking in.

Best wishes to you and the younguns for a Happy and Healthy New Year...

Got an ice rink yet?

The tranny wont need any lube system when it idles and when you are driving the gears on the countershaft will pick up enough lube fot the bearings and throw it around. Are you having any leaks at the diff shaft and is the front seal leaking out the bottom front of the tranny. It doesent take much play on the front bearing os the tranny to make a tranny noisy. I will put a new one in when im changing seals and have been surprised at how much quieter the tranny is when done. I have probably done at least 6 or more in the last few yrs as i do repair and fix and sell too. The set-up on your tractor is not that different than the A and BS that i am always playing with. I am finishing a restoration on a 48 CUB even new bearings in the whole rear and tranny. Poor tractor must have been in water as the inner bearings on the diff shaft were all rusted and didnt even turn. Made loud noise just setting on stands and turning wheels over. Will be like a new tractor when done as thats what the owner wants. Even had to rebuild the shifter on the PTO been fun as i always wanted to do a CUB.

Gene,
for sure I will be looking at swapping all seals and bearings possible while I have it apart. I like the news about the slinger, especially since there is no pto in this one, doubt there will ever be. I have heard as well how guys have just taken the broken one out and not replaced it. I like to be sure, considering all the work it is to get in and out.

Oh, speaking of Cubs....I have 2 of those and the '49 is in dire need of a shaft bearing replace. The fluid will leak out when the tractor is on an incline. That will be for another day.

Rudi,
Back-atcha with the New Years wishes. As for the ice rink.....that is a no-go. More time to spend on the 130, ice fishing, and relaxing.
