404 not getting fuel

I have an International 404 that will run for about 5 minutes and just quit. I believe the problem is fuel related because if it is running about 600 rpm and quits firing, if I am fast enough to shut it down to idle the tractor will pick up again and run for approx. 10 seconds. The carburetor has been cleaned and a new sedimant bowl assembly has been installed.

Any ideas will be much appreciated. Thank you. Bill C.

Will it continue to run with the gas cap off or ajar? Sounds like the vent hole in the gas cap is clogged.

When it dies, how long before it will start again?? Definitely sounds fuel related---however, our SMTA had the coil feed wire [6-volts] somehow get down to 2 or 3 strands carrying current to the coil. This was inside the insulation jacket where the wire went over the valve cover & where it was held by a clip. We had many hours trouble-shooting that one--but behaved just like yours. Check for spark at the coil when problems start. Carry a jumper wire along & hook it up from the hot battery post to the coil hot lead. Could be a weak coil also---along with a condenser getting ready to go South.

Bill, a common problem. Run for 5 minutes and quit. Then the carb fills up and it restarts again. Main test is to remove the fuel line from carb, run it through a hose into a gas can or bucket for 10 minutes or 5 minutes longer than what it runs. Need a good steady flow. Even with new sediment bowl, you still get chunks of rust in the tank that settles around the bowl intake and blocks the flow and you may not see much in the bowl. Basic fix would be to put a 1 to 2 inch piece of screen or plastic/rubber hose on the bowl intake nubbing sticking up into the tank. It also keeps the water on the bottom of the tank from getting in.

Otherwise I'd be for changing the condenser and coil. The coils can be weak or a winding go bad and not get hot after long running.

Post back with your results and let us know. I'm leaning towards a rust problem first. If you have even just a few rust fines in the bowl, you can count on some big chunks in the tank.

Brownie 450 pointed me in the right direction. I was checking the wires for the coil and where the wires come come out of the wiring harness one wire had a large crack in the insulation. I bent the wire about 20 degrees and it just fell apart. The wire goes to the oil pressure switch. After repairing this wire I spent 3 hours cleaning snow from our drive, we live in North Central Ohio, and the tractor ran like a new one.

Thank you, Bill C.
