B275 electrical

Does anyone out there know how to convert from positive ground to negative ground on an international B275 tractor? Mine has a generator, not an alternator. Thanks,Wayne.

Since this is diesel tractor, there's no ignition system to worry about, so it's REAL simple.

With the engine shut down, swap the battery connectionss, then POLARIZE the GENERATOR before startup.

What electricals does this tractor have... USA made Delco?

If so, momentarily jumper between the "BATT" and "ARM" terminals at the voltage regulator BEFORE startup.

("GEN" is an alternate name for the "ARM" terminal.)

IF the generator is another make an alternate procedure might be required. (IF it is a "B" system generator.)

NOTE... some voltage regulators use different metals for the upper and lower contacts, set up to work best with one polarity or the other, and operating the regulator with the reverse polarity MAY shorted contact life somewhat.

Hi Ron. Yea, I finally got here.I'm just slow. Hey Bob.Don't I have to reverse the wires on my amp gage also? It seems like I heard that some place. As far as I know everything is factory in it. I'll have to lift the bonnet and see if I can find a brand name. My clutch went out and I have it over to my neighbors shop getting ready to break it in half. I'm still trying to find a COMPLETE clutch assy.that doesn't cost a small fortune.I don't know if I will need it or not but want to have one located. Thanks.

I've got four B-275s, all now 12 volt negative ground with Delco or Hitachi alternators. So, if you get stuck and have any specific questions - I'll try to answer. Also have a 3414 backhoe that is basically the same as a B-275.

If you plan on keeping that Lucas generator, you'll need a different regulator. It' not worth it. You can install a negative-ground Hitachi or Delco alternator much cheaper and get a lot more charging current for running lights, etc.

Why do you want to change the polarity? There's no gain, either way - just happens to be a necessity when installing an alternator.

As to the clutch? It's a pretty rugged seup and it would be rare when all needs replacement. I've put new clutches in many. Usually two new clutch disks, a throwout bearing, and - sometimes new clutch fingers - and you'll be fine. The new fingers are still available from IH, over the counter.

If I change to an alternator,do I still have to change the voltage regulator? The reason to change to a negative ground from positive is if you put anything like a radio or something on without isolating it form the metal, you fry it.I had to mount it on a piece of wood to keep it isolated. Other than that ,I don't have any reason except it doesn't put out enough for the extra lights. Thanks, Wayne.

You can easily mount a Hitachi or Delco 10SI or 12SI and eliminate the original voltage regulator. The alternators both have one built-in.
