Hugh, trying to learn more about this. Have some information that C tractors serial 48000 to 48499 used the same sleeves as block 354894 and also 354898 R4 or higher suffix may have some change from lower suffix. Know anything about this?

On the same subject, my C parts manual is calling the 366294 R92 ASSEMBLY a C123, SN 36001-up. The block in this assembly is 366204 R2. Probably with thick sleeves -- any clarification on this?

Dave: Block number 354898 R1 was a new block for the Super C in 1951. It got used in Super A as well with thicker sleeves. By the time 100 and 200 came along 354898 was R2. For that reason, I can't see an R4 suffix in 1948 or 49.

354894 is a new one on me.

CNKS: I do know block number 366204 R1 was used in 130 and 230. My understanding is this block was only ever fitted with 3-1/8" sleeves, and a very thin wall sleeve. Again like I told Dave, if R1 was used in 130-230, I can't see R2 being around in the late 40. My reaction 366204 R2 might have been listed as a replacement engine for a C around 1960, after 130-230 production.

Block 366294 R92, I don't recognize. It is my understanding there were many other block part numbers, most of them replacement engines. You've got to remember that most castings that had to be replaced in the 1st 10 years from new tractor were probably done with new parts. I never replaced an engine casting that new, but we did replace a final drive in 130 around 1961, it had to be done with new casting. There just were no junked small tractors back then.

My only thoughts on what you and Dave have are new replacement parts listings for 10-15 year old tractors. I just can't see an R2, R3, R4 or R92 being produced before an R1.

366294 is an assembly with all the parts, 366204 is the block number. I am not sure, but I don't think in that case it is a replacement block -- because it gives a serial break. Which implies that more than half of the C's actually had C123's with thicker sleeves to maintain the C113--not saying that's the way they were, but it is the way I read the manual, which does have a few mistakes. I haven't gotten into the R1,2, etc, because I'll worry about that if and when I rebuilt my C and Super A engines. What I have learned from this an other similar discussions is that one size does not fit all, which will then be helpful.

CNKS: My 130 is 366204 R1, I know it is and original engine. In all my experience with IH part numbers, I've never seen R2, R3 or R4 used before R1. Those were always a progression from R1 upwards as time went on.

Hugh:

Just a quick Happy New Year to you from us down here in Moncton way. Hope the New Year brings you health, happiness and hope :!:

Hugh, I can't verfy this because I don't have a 130 or 230 parts manual, and the CaseIH website does not give the detail that the parts manual does. But, on any part the higher R numbers replace the previous part and are downward compatible. Thus the R1 in your 130 was replaced by R2 at some point in time. The R2 is in my C parts manual, and is likely in the latest edition of the 130 manual because the R1 version was no longer produced when the latest version was printed. My C manual was printed AFTER your 130 was produced. In other words, when you could actually order the block for the C, you got the latest version of the 130/230 block (except that you had to order the whole assembly) The 230 (can't find the engine listed for the 130 for some weird reason) parts diagram lists the same number given for about the last half of C production, with a later R number -- 366294 R93 as an assembly. They ran out of room for the block number, but it will be the same number as previously discussed, perhaps with a higher R value. To summarize, I am not disagreeing with you. Your 130 has the R1 because it was produced before the R2 was listed in the manuals as a replacement. It would be interesting to see if the last 130 or 230 original tractors had the R2 block. This is probably written about as clear as liquid hog manure.

Rudi: Getting close to two years since you, Gordon and I had that good visit at your place in Moncton. I don't get my free trips to Moncton anymore.

Happy New Year to you as well, continued good health and good Cubing.

Hugh:

We remember and were talking about that the other day. When every you get a chance to come down this way... if you can stop by that would be good.. or maybe if we know you are heading to the valley we could possibly meet at Mary's.. There is going to be some sort of CubFest here on Labour Day weekend... you are more than welcome .. at any time.

Either way, hope all is well, and you keep on collectin..and having fun with the bigger toys..

Oh, Pole Barn is built and now Ellie, Granny and Jethro get to live indoors :!:
