MW super MTA parts

Hi, I was wondering if any of you IH guys had a good source for M&W engine parts. I pulled my MTA apart yesterday and found that the tractor had M&W pistons in it. Some of the rings do not look that good. This tractor has set since 1988. It is 4 1/4 bore not 4 1/8th which from what I have been told by a few is that it is the same as a 400. The piston pin is the 1 inch pin. The part number on the bottom of the piston is AP77 and it is a step head piston. The top oil ring measures .94 thick and the middle two compression measure .96 and the oil ring measures .250. The pisons look good and at this point if I can just find rings I would like to hone the cyls a little put new rings in and roll a set of bearings in. The crank looks great and I will just need std brgs. I have a few people looking for parts right now but have not heard anything back yet. If I can't find rings at a reasonable cost I might just eng up putting new sleves and pistons in because std kits seem to be readily avail from howard and other sources.
Any help is appreciated. This red tractor is still a little different to work on compared to the green ones I am used to but it is fun to get back out and work on something that all I need is std tools.

Thanks

Trent

You might try 402-564-5993 on the rings. If the engine has sleeves installed the standard piston and sleeve sets won't fit. 4-1/4 M&W piston and sleeve set required boring block. If the pistons are installed running on the block, block may have enough wear that standard sleeves won't fit correct.

Thanks, I was not aware that the block had to be bored for these bigger M&W sleves. I thought the sleves might have just been thinner, but boring does make sense. I do appreciate any and all help I have gotten with this project because my IH experience is very little. There red tractors have a few more cylinders to work on than what I am used to. I will call the 402 number and see what happens.

Thanks

Trent

Forgot to mention, I thought the 77 piston was for 4-1/8 and 79 was 4-1/4. You may want to double check.

Just imagine you're working on two deeres, becuase that's what one Farmall is worth anyway :)

Thanks, I'll be here all week. Try the veal.

Custom made rings of almost any size here:

Have done business with the owner, Dave Reed, and have been very pleased.

Since I have time sitting here doing nothing on a cold day and you're new to IH heres some info. SM, SMTA and 400 were originaly 4 inch bore with thick sleeves. IH and others sold P&S sets for those engines with thin sleeves and 4-1/8 bore pistons. SM through 450 all used the same block size that sleeves fit in, no block work required unless out of tolerance. SM,SMTA and part of 400 engines used a piston pin dia. of 1.3126 originaly. Later 400 engines used piston pin dia. of .99985 normaly called 1 inch. IH and some others sold pistons with the small pin for use in engines that came with big piston pin and sold adapter bushings to go in original connecting rods to use the pistons. Pistons were also still sold with big piston pin. Later 400 connecting rods were changed on small end to use small pins with a normal thickness bushing. 450 tractors used the small pin and thinwall sleeves for 4-1/8 original bore. If your tractor has the original connecting rods it has adapter bushings in rod. IH never offered a 4-1/4 piston. As posted before check the number on M&W piston again to make sure it 77 instead of 79. If its 77 I don't think block was bored. You have block to look at though.

Thanks for all of the help. I went back to the shop that is cleaning up the pistons for me(friend from church that has an industrial washer). Anyway I had him remeasure and sure enough they are 4 1/8 and the number is the AP77. The piston pin is the "1 inch" pin. So after a few phone calls I have located a set of rings in the great state of Missouri. They will be here next week. Again thanks for all of the help. But the service manual only tells you so much and not being familiar with the 4 cylinder creatures makes things more interesting. It is also a little more difficult to track down parts, since I do not exactly have IH salvage and parts suppliers on speed dial. I will post some pics when I get it up and running. Hopefully It will find a nice home when I am done. I just knew when I went to look at it, it was too good to go to the junk yard. The owners son originally told me it was just a super m that had been in their shed for 20 plus years, but when we walked in the door and I saw the whoop de do lever I knew i had to try to get it going again.

That's the best name I've run across for that over priced TA lever... I gotta make up some decals to put on mine. Thanks Deerejocky.. Ag
