986 oil in radiator - 436 Ci

With continued maintenance on the cooling system; coolant filter, new coolant, there is still oil in the radiator. The engine seems to be burning the coolant due to steam coming from the breather, also smells like anti-freeze. She builds pressure in the cooling system.

could this be head gasket, oil cooler, what?

I doubt it is the oil cooler as you are getting pressure in the cooling sys. It sounds as though leak if from compression; head gasket, head, etc. Hope for a head gasket. Good Luck

Ok ya say ya have STEAM coming out the breather . Ya say that ya have oil in the coolant . But do you have coolant in the OIL ????? IF no coolant in the oil but oil in the coolant then the first place i would go is the oil cooler as oil pressure is higher then the coolant pressure . But if ya have coolant in the oil then i would be looking at the sleeves . It maybe a head gskt or a cracked head . With out seeing just how much pressure you are getting into the coolant system we are all guessing here . IF ya find that you do have a coolant leak into the oil then myself i would drop the pan and pressure up the cooling system with about 18 lbs. of pressure and start looking to see just where it was coming from . As for the STEAM out the breather it could be just blow by with a lot of condensations .

First off how much pressure are you getting into the rad. have you put a gauge on it??? . Keep in mind here that on the high end of coolant pressure your only looking at maybe 14 -15 lbs hot . Now as for oil pressure your looking at 50 plus pounds . To test for a head gskt problem Here is the way that i do and this must be done on a COLD engine , first drain the coolant then remove the fan belt from the water pump next remove the thermostat and replace the neck fill with water till the water is even with the top , now sometimes ya have to make up a extra piece of hose so that it is standing stright up in the air and the water level is so that ya can see it . Then fire up the engine and run her up to full throttle if no water comes gushing out then no head gskt. problem but if she looks like old faithful then son ya got a problem . Now if there is a head gskt problem then ya had best be looking at sleeve stand out and here ya may be looking at pulling the engine down to correct this .

i agree with tractor vet 100%,the other ideas remind me of an autioneer i know. he keeps pulling bids out of the sky and then SOLD!

Good points made by tractor vet for testing for leakage. Don't over look those pesky cavitation pin holes in sleeves as very little antifreeze will show up in pan but it will put a very foamy oil in coolant and will show up in breather pipe.

Same problem I had with mine, inside the breather pipe was slimey antifreeze. A set of sleeves solved the problem. A jobber set and the shop forman installed them for me on a Friday evening and Saturday morning. Had it home by noon Saturday, I can't remember the cost three years ago but it seemed very reasonable.

If there is any significant amount of oil the coolant it is usually the oil cooler that is leaking. When the engine is running the oil will go into the coolant. When you shut it off, the pressure remaining in the cooling system will now force coolant into the oil system. I have seen them leak so much that the oil and coolant both looked the same.

Leaking sleeves do not usually put any significant amount of oil in the coolant. Nozzle sleeves will leak coolant into the cylinder but no significant oil back into the cooling system. Unless the fuel system has been turned up head gasket failures are not too common.

I would remove the oil cooler and test it. I have a couple of plates that bolt on the cooler, one with an air nipple. I flush out the oil side, install the plates and apply air pressure. Stand the cooler on end and fill the water jacket with water. Watch for bubbles.
