SMD Mag to distributor question

My SMD was switched from a mag to a distributor. We"re having trouble getting it to start. Looks as if the trouble is in the firing order. When the #1 cylinder is a TDC, and the timing mark is directly on the crank pulley mark, the rotor is on the # 3 position on the rotor cap. I haven"t tried to start it yet with this setting. Any suggestions? Does the fact that the diesel engine rotates opposite the gas engine have anything to do with the plug wire placement? Marv

The distributor is 180 degrees out of time, you can either remove the distributor, rotate the distributor drive 180 degrees and reinstall, or just move the plug wires on the cap. #1 plug wire to where the rotor points to when #1 piston is at TDC, going counterclockwise from there, next position is the #3 spark plug wire, then #4 and finally #2.

The diesel engine does not rotate opposite the gas, the distributor rotates in the opposite direction, counterclockwise versus clockwise on the gas.

Marv your firing order will be in the opposite direction on the distributor cap of the deisel. The shaft turns counter clockwise of the gas burners, The firing order will be the same but go in the opposite direction with your wires on the cap.

Thanks Nebraska Kirk for the quick reply. Everything sounds so simple now. Will try to get the tractor running tomorrow. Marv

Are you using the correct distributor for the diesel application?

If you use one for a gasser on the diesel the centrifugal spark advance becomes a "retard".

Important point was made about spark advance, if it does fire up and then the spark retards it will most likely die off again. They used very little spark adv on these engines, only 8 degrees and the later 450 used no advance at all, just straight shaft. You could block the advance so it would not move and get by with no advance. I personally always set the timing when it is running for the best rpm with the least advance possible. Play with it. (gas dist were any where from 16 to 40 degrees depending on application)
