Farmall Super C 6 volt vs 12 volt

I had posted before about trying to determine if the Farmall Super C was 6 or 12 volt. I noticed there is a resistor block on the tractor. Therefore, can I assume then the generator is 12 volt but everything else still is 6 volt?

(quoted from post at 00:57:47 01/08/09) I had posted before about trying to determine if the Farmall Super C was 6 or 12 volt. I noticed there is a resistor block on the tractor. Therefore, can I assume then the generator is 12 volt but everything else still is 6 volt?

From the factory the SC was a 6 volt. Does it have a battery in it? Does it run? all the 12 volt conversions I have seen have a neg ground, 6 v is a positive ground. Give some more info or pictures would even be better. Ron

More than 50% of the time the owner will put a 12 volt battery in the tractor change to a ballast resistor, and leave everything else go to the dogs. Just charging the battery once every other day. So what I would do is to put a 12 volt battery in it, (light switch off, and generator field wire unhooked) and start it. I would then put a volt meter on the gen Armature terminal and short the F terminal to ground. If it reads less than 10 volts, I would assume it is 6 volt, if it begins charging the battery, and reading 13.8 to 14.5 volts, It is a 12v gen. JimN

Put the 12v battery in positive ground. All IH 12volt systems with Generator were pos ground that I ever heard of. JimN

If the battery cables are on it, the last battery should have been connected in a way that left the bigger of the terminals either on the ground, or the supply. Polarizing the generator prior to starting it (flashing a shorting wire across the Gen and Bat terminals on the regulator) should set it up for the trial I described. Being there would be best, but we are not. Jim

jim said all ih 12v. systems with generators are pos. ground. i dont agree with that. to my knowledge 6v. is pos. ground.12v. is neg. ground. the proof is in my tractors, which are too many to list. i have never seen a 12v. pos. ground in any wd6, wd9,400, 450, 660,560,460. so not sure if its a mistake or i missed the tractor, (boat)

Back in the 1980's, Pappy and I converted a customer's Super C to 12V, at the customer's request. Reversed the terminals on the ammeter, installed a 12V generator and regulator we had on hand, reversed polarity on the coil and added a resistor, and changed all the light bulbs from 6V to 12V.

The starter spun so fast, I don't think it made a full revolution before it started. And 20+ years later, not the first complaint from the customer.

But if the tractor's got a resistor wired into the coil circuit, it's NOT 6V.

Just a note to add. I have a 1951 Super-C that has been changed from 6 volt positive to 12 volt positive by adding the 12 volt battery, ballist resistor to the 6 volt coil and the generator was changed to an 12 volt POSITIVE ground alternator. The starter is still the original as also is the voltage reg.
Been running this way for 25 years with no problems. This tractor is used for plowing snow and I got tired of changing weak 6 volt batteries every year. When it's below zero a 12 volt battery is very nice. Starts on the first crank.
Some of you may not believe when I say 12 Positive ground alternator -but I had it specially made by an old generator/alternator man.
