M serial # missing need help.

I have just purchased an M that we are going to have to rebuild the motor in(its stuck bad). The serial number plate is missing so here starts the detective work.
It has the date code on the motor of 3-14-T which I would take to be March 14th, 1950. Is this right?
It also has a number just below and behind the alt/gen which is FBKM 212170. Is this actually the serial number? If it is, according to the serial number guide on this site that would make it a late 1949 model.
Any info would be appreciated . Thanks in advance.

The serial number you found on the engine is the engine serial number which was different than the chassis serial number. That is odd that the date code says 1950 but the serial number says 1949. Did you get the date "3-14-T" off the engine block or head?

Your tractor serial # was probably 222170. Your engine # is right at the point they made the engine and tractors another thousand apart. I don't have a close enough serial # recorded on each side of your serial # to pinpoint it exact. Anyway the engine was put in a tractor made in late march of 1950. As more diesel engines were put in M tractors the gas engine serial numbers kept getting lower than the tractor serial numbers. This even thousands apart for serial numbers only works for most of the later M gas tractors.

yes your date calculations are right (T and U were both used in 1950 S would be 1949) acording to guy fays data book there are two sets of serial numbers for years 1945-1952. the first set for 1949 is 180514-213578. the second set for 1949 is 177220-212736. for 1950 the first set is 213579-247517, the second set for 1950 is 212737-247517. so it is a 1950
.

if the motor is stuck from water in the cylinders than clean them out and dump in mixture of light wight motor oil and karosene(5w 20 or lighter) let it soak for a while and will make it easier to remove the pistons.

To avoid confusing people reading this post T alone was used in 1950, U and W were used in 1951.

Whether it is a late '49 or an early '50, I do not think it will make any difference in the parts you need to order for the rebuild. Let us know how you progress. An M is a great tractor. mike

just out of curisoty, why would you rebuild an engine in a tractor with out a tag? If its for a working tractor i could understand, but there are plenty of good M's out there with tags worth saving.

just because it dosen't have a tag dosen't mean it dosen't deserve not being saved. it's still a old tractor and they all are reliable with or with out the tag when the are running. and if you want a tag on one that bad you could order a new onw from here, and then get it engraved.

This tractor belonged to my uncle. He died in 2001. My cousin took care of it until he died in 2006. It has a Kelly all hyd loader, the extra hyd pump under the belly, Balin power steering, and the sheet metal is perfect. After my cousin died someone else in the family moved it outside without a raincap, so the motor is very stuck. But with or without the tag it is a great old tractor.
