Brian: I think you will find a photo in the implement section of photo gallery. Go there and type in "IH 31 loader".

The one Randy is showing you is a 33, trip bucket. 33A has the hydraulic control bucket.

Found these pictures of Andy Motteberg’s 1943 Farmall H with a Model #30 loader in the Tractor Photos section at the left.

The #31 looks a lot like this one, maybe Hugh MacKay will see this and he can advise what differences there are between the two models.

The main difference between the #30 and #31 is that the safety shoes were standard on the 30 and an option on the 31. I don't see the shoes in the pictures of this loader. If they are not on it, it is either a #31 or the shoes have been removed.

There are more details in the July-August 2008 Red Power.

Keith: The one we had was a 31, didn't have the shoes Jim mentions, and that coinsides with his statment. I remember my dad discussing the shoes with the dealer, and dealer told him shoes went missing from every loader he sold within one year. That also agrees with Jim's statment.

Having said that, and bear in mind my dad traded off his 31 loader 53 years ago, thus my memory will be just a bit limited here. On our 31 loader I seem to remember the point where cylinder ram hooks to that 6" wide vertical link, being closer to the top, in fact within 4" of the top. Secondly, on our loader that cross member in front of steering wheel was the highest point when the loader was down. I know the steering wheel was still higher than the cross member by about 2-3 inches. My dad was trying load manure from under a low building. By removing the mufler and ducking his head he was able to go under an 8x8 beam. Problem was when he made that last push to fill the bucket, he spun the wheels on the dirt floor. When he backed out hunched over, as the back wheels went over the dirt piles from spinning the 8x8 crunched the steering wheel against the loader cross member. Nothing else hit, thus steering wheel was the highest point. My guess is those top links must have hooked lower at the back on the 31 loader. Again there could be some modification on Andy's loader.

That is it, as I remember.

My opinion: Both #30 and #31 had shoes. I believe the main difference was that the beams were straight on the #30 and curved on the #31. Cyclinder diameter may have been larger on the #31.

Yes, that's my #30. The 31 was very similar, it had the same style arms. They are very similar with just a few changes. We need RustyFarmall to post a picture of his #31.

F Dean: Both the 30 and 31 loaders have the same chanel iron push arms with about 4" of offset, same as Andy's. 30 and 31 only work with narrow front The 33 and 33A have the curved pipe push arms, designed to work over a wide front end.
