What does the Hydro Trans sound like when pulling? Is a dull to loud hum when pulling hard normal? Why do this tractors run hot when you pull them hard?

floyds: Probably because the hydro is 35 years old, and these tractors were never designed for heavy drawbar pulling. They were designed to give infinately variable speeds while on heavy PTO work. Work like precission vegetable harvesters.

My uncle had a 656 Hydro and pulled 4 14s with it but yes, it hummed and ran hot. My Grandpa's standard shift 656 (My cousin still has this tractor) would run circles around it. But Hugh is correct, the Hydro was great for the hay bailer, mowers, corn planter, cultivator (pre no-till days) etc. The humming sound is normal for these tractors and gets louder under a heavy load.
