using a cub cadet 12v genorator on a Farmall A

i was wondering if i could use a 12 volt genorator of a cub cadet on my 1945 farmall A, insted of the alternator that is on it, because i have one laying around and i dont want to look ariund and spend extra money on a diferent one. plus the alternator is a huge eye sore.
 
Local lawnmower shop owner told me this type of generator has very little ouput. Experiment and post. Thomas Edison wasn't afraid to fail. I have personally tried lots of things like this. Some worked out purty good. Dave
 
i'm just curious about it before i actual go doing it. i just want to know if it would put out enough to keep the battery charged, and power the lights. i don't know much about the gen. I found it laying in my grandpas garage. i'm 75% shure it's from a cub cadet. i know it's made by international and has a 12 volt regulator on the side of it. and it looks brand new.
 
I hd a Cub cadet generator quit one time and took it to the repair shop. He said they were not made toput out more than about 10 amps ( I think), and too much will overheat them and cause problems. Doubt if it will work very long or keep the battery up with the lights on .

Quick answer is "no". It would charge the battery and run the ignition OK. But if you also want to power lights then forget about it.

Those combination motor/starters have very modest output - like 8 amps or so cold. And once they get hot - which they do(!) - output is even less.

Most likely you can sell your Cub Cadet generator to a collector, purchase a fresh rebuilt generator to fit your A and still come out $$$ ahead.
 
Farmall 140's were set up with 12 volt generators before they switched to alternators. I have one that way and it has worked for 40 years.
