B axle removal

I was wondering if I could remove my left drive drop housing without pulling the long axle out of the axle tube. If not do I have to pull PTO and pully to get to the inside of the axle?

The axle will come out with or when the drop housing is pulled away from the tube. You don't need get into the PTO or trans. The axle can be removed from the housing by removing the brake from the pulled axle and by removing the the plate on outside of the housing. The axle will then come out through plate opening.
 
Have a large floor jack handy to support the axel housing as it is rather heavy. Do remove the wheel. You may not need help to pull the old but if you do not have a good overhead hoist you may not be able to reinstall without help. The bolts are old and brittle so be careful with the air wrench. I do not recommend it at all. Have a new axel seal before you pull the old one. (Do not be tempted to drive the old seal in, pull it out.) Have your eyes on a new break band. If the old one is well worn or oil soaked, you will want to replace it. I believe all these parts are avaliable from Case IH or this web page. Lineing up the break band pin on reinstall is a little tricky and you do not want to damage your new grease seal. A good hoist is invaluable at that time. Larry M.
 
When you pull the drop housing the differental shaft will come along. You dont need to remove the pto assy. To remove the shaft after the drop housing is removed you need to remove the brake drum then the shaft will come out thru the drop housing by removing the little cover.The shaft will not go out towards the tranny end.
 
thanks I thought I could get away with just taking the drop off. I've got that all loose and the wheel off already. Will have to put a few things back together and do it right.
