What was the engineering behind the tapered keystone top ring. I think that under pressure it would put more pressure on the cylinder wall but as the ring wore it had more side clearance to leak.
 
Keystone top or compression rings provide a larger wear surface thereby will last significantly longer. However this does cause more friction and a slight loss in power with higher fuel consumption. With the larger wear surface they aren't as effective in scraping off any oil that gets past the lower rings. Also as was stated earlier, the ring grooves are "self-cleaning". I believe the more expensive Keystone ring design is a superior design due to it's increased durability and self-cleaning attribute.
