Transmission cover

Hi,
I removed the Transmission cover that contains the shift leaver and all the forks/sliders. My question is how do I make sure that the the forks engage the transmission properly when I reassemble it. It seems to me that It would be quite possible to have the fork miss its match and thus the transmission would not shift properlly.... or worse.

BTW this is on an IH2444 (same as the 444 as far as the transmission goes)

Thanks,
Ian

By putting the shifter in neutral, and all gears in their neutral position, and placing the forks on the collar grooves with a dab of grease to position them, the cover can be lowered on and fit into the sockets. A crane is handy, or three steady helpers. JimN

Once it is on is there any way to verify that all the forks are mated with there respective collars? It seems to me that if a fork has missed its collar the shifter would still seem to move normally however the actual gear would be free to move on its own as it is not connected to a fork. I am concerned that if a fork has missed and I try to move the tractor some serious gear mangling could result!

Don't quote me on this but I'm thinking you'll feel the difference if you miss.

To ensure no gear-mangling ensues if you do happen to miss, simply be careful when you go to move the tractor. If driving, let the clutch out slow in a higher gear with the tractor idling and if the tractor dies on you, it's stuck in two.

Sure. And you are correct. Tooth damage can sure happen.
Lift one rear wheel with a jack then block it up. Leave the engine off. clutch out (as though moving, foot off pedal)
because it is in Neutral, the tire should spin freely. Stop the tire. Put it in each gear, one after the other, and see if it now stops the wheel.
If it passes the test, do this.
With the wheel Up/blocked (cant fall) and the other brake locked, pull the High voltage coil wire out of the distributor and ground it to the engine)
Mark the tire at the bottom with chalk.
Put it in first gear with clutch out as above.
Crank the engine for three cylinder compression strokes RRR RRR RRR.
Mark the tire at the bottom.
Rotate the tire (in neutral) until the first mark is back at the bottom.
Put it in second. Crank RRR RRR RRR
put a new mark labeled 2 at the bottom.
Do this for all gears and reverse, then put in all the bolts in the cover. JimN

The 2 times I've pulled covers, I was able to look in thru the belt puley opening. Shift into all the gears and you should see them move forward and backwards. It will be pretty evident if you goofed it up.

Well the best way is to use dowels to keep the cover in alignment a hoist or cheery picker a long thin pry bar or screw driver and a lite to see in there as you go back on and a extra pair of hands. Ain't missed one yet .
