Oil rings on pistons

I know this is a Farmall site, but I'm asking everyone possible to get my question answered. Here is a piston from one of the Molines I'm working on. It's a G-VI LP. Note the 2 oil rings on it and the difference in the 2. I've been told that, especially since I'm running on propane, I only need 1 oil ring. My question is can I take the oil ring from the bottom groove and use it in the top groove as the only oil ring on the piston? Thanks,Dan

I would personally not do it.

I think it might encourage oil consumption which might not let you sleep at night as it would hint at compression/cylinder wear problems.

However, for top-cylinder lube on my LPG forklifts, I take out the spark plugs every once in awhile and give a few drops of Marvel Mystery oil directly into the combustion chamber. ATF is said to work just as well although I have not tried it personally.

Thanks for the reply. Let me see if I understand what you're saying. You believe the scraper ring will remove too much oil in the top and cause excessive wear on the compression rings? Then eventually start burning oil? Thank you so much for your help. Dan

I think you would be ok to use the 3 piece oil ring under the compression rings and leave the bottom one out. Is the rod drilled so the wrist pin is pressure lubed? It may make a difference, but I don't know for sure. Maybe tractor vet would know.
